Hwang Cheol-soon, a broadcaster and fitness trainer who was active as a "Jingman" on tvN's 'Comedy Big League' (hereinafter 'Cobi'), shared his current situation in prison through a handwritten letter.
On the 23rd, a video titled ‘Sorry and Thank You’ was released on Hwang Cheol-soon’s personal channel.
Hwang Cheol-soon expressed, “In a world where it is hard to believe that every year there are heatwaves and heavy snowfalls that occur once in a hundred years, I respect and honor all of you coexisting in this reality. This summer, despite the record-breaking heat, I spent time in a space of about 3 pyeong (approximately 10 square meters) with seven adult men, reflecting and contemplating harshly. Currently, I am trying to regain my sanity in the midst of record-breaking snowfall and sub-zero temperatures by taking cold showers more than twice a day and spending time in atonement.”
He also reflected, saying, “I believe that everything is the result of my actions, and I feel like I have shed all my tears for a lifetime while tossing and turning in the detention center for several months.”
Hwang Cheol-soon stated, “While living in prison, I have come to acknowledge and accept the harsh reality that I have no choice but to retire here, which has led me to feel humiliation and emptiness, plunging me into a deep dilemma along with depression. For those who wish and wait for my return through my skills, I want to burn with determination and repay them with sincerity after my release. I believe this is the only thing I must do first, and there is no choice in this exit.”
Hwang Cheol-soon also mentioned the difficult situation after entering the facility. He said, “After entering, I lost over 23kg and had to endure days of extreme stress. Here, even bodyweight exercises are strictly prohibited. For a bodybuilder not to be able to do bodyweight exercises is like a death sentence,” and added, “I have barely gained 8kg by consuming a box of Choco Pie and 15 packets of mixed grain powder and 10 packets of Job's tears tea daily. The only protein I can have is one pack of tuna for one meal a day, which is absurdly insufficient, and my body has become emaciated with only a protruding belly. I am confident I can rebuild my body after my release, but I hope that the process of muscle loss does not lead to imbalances as it is happening now.”
Hwang Cheol-soon was indicted for hitting his then-girlfriend, A, more than 20 times in the face and head with his fist and kicking her in the face several times during an argument in a building in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, on October 16 last year. The first trial court sentenced Hwang Cheol-soon to one year in prison and ordered him to be detained. In the appeal trial, he was sentenced to nine months in prison.
Previously, Hwang Cheol-soon was tried for assaulting a customer after a dispute at a restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, in 2015, and was sentenced to six months in prison with a one-year probation. In 2016, he was charged with drunk driving and had his license revoked, and in 2021, he was tried for assaulting two men in their twenties who filmed him with their mobile phones and for throwing their phones to the ground, resulting in damage (assault, property damage), receiving a summary order of a fine of 5 million won.
