Singer Kim Chang-yeol expressed his disappointment regarding the term 'Chang-ryeol' which plays on his name.
On the broadcast of Channel A's cultural program 'Close Friends Documentary – Four-Person Table' (hereafter 'Four-Person Table') on the 1st, Kim Chang-yeol appeared as the host and invited Park Sun-joo and Seong Dae-hyun.
On that day, Kim Chang-yeol prepared a feast for his guests. With a table full of dishes like pig's feet and buckwheat noodles, Kim Chang-yeol explained, "I have been hurt by food before. The term 'Chang-ryeol' (means) that the portion is small."
He added, "So today, I prepared a generous amount. I will show you what it really means to be Chang-yeol."
The terms 'Chang-ryeol' and 'Chang-ryeol-like' refer to a situation where the quantity is small or the quality is low compared to the price.
This term originated in 2009 when Kim Chang-yeol signed an advertising model contract with Company A to develop and distribute products using his name and likeness. Subsequently, Company A supplied a convenience store with instant food products called 'Kim Chang-yeol's Snack Bar' featuring his face and name, and some consumers criticized the product's contents as being poor compared to the price, leading to the creation of this neologism.
Kim Chang-yeol filed a lawsuit against Company A for damages, but both the first and second trials resulted in a ruling against the plaintiff.
