Singer and actor Yang Dong-geun expressed his feelings regarding the criticism he received for attending an event hosted by a pastor who defended former President Yoon Seok-yeol's martial law.
On the 2nd, Yang Dong-geun wrote on his SNS, “I was the fool for believing you. Guys, feel free to be disappointed and curse as much as you want. You have the freedom to do so.” He also used a direct expression, saying, “Isn’t it a bit much for me to be X years old?”
In a photo he shared, the words ‘XX’ and a hand gesture were written on his face. This is interpreted as a message directed at fans who expressed disappointment in him after attending the event.
The day before, Yang Dong-geun posted on SNS, “It was such a gracious time,” sharing a video of himself attending a summer camp event for youth and young adults held at the Busan World Church from the 28th to the 31st of last month. As a Christian, Yang Dong-geun is known to have participated in this camp as a member of the CCM performance group Case Spirit. He also left the phrase “Wash it Whiter than snow.”
Following this, a controversy arose among netizens regarding religious freedom and political inclination. This was due to the fact that Pastor Son Hyun-bo, who hosted the event, is a prominent figure in the conservative faction within the Protestant community. He led a group called ‘Save Korea’ last year, advocating for former President Yoon's defense of the emergency martial law on December 3 and opposing impeachment rallies.

Some netizens criticized Yang Dong-geun's actions, saying, “Religion is free, but please don’t support martial law,” and “Having beliefs is free, but the church supports insurrection, and responding this way is very disappointing.” On the other hand, other netizens showed support, saying, “I support Yang Dong-geun’s intentions,” “It’s not a big deal, there are many patients in South Korea,” and “Don’t worry about the harsh critics, just keep showing your good side like now.”
As the controversy continued, Yang Dong-geun's agency, Jo Entertainment, stated, “He was invited to attend a Christian event,” and “He has no personal relationship with Pastor Son and did not express a political stance.”
