Dexter Studio has acquired new AI-based VFX (Visual Effects) patents, reaffirming its commitment to technological innovation for improving the efficiency and quality of VFX production.
The content specialist company Dexter Studio announced on the 28th that it has completed the registration of a total of 4 new patents, including AI de-aging and upscaling.
The newly registered AI patents include ▲ Video Sequence De-aging Consistency Maintenance Technology ▲ Multi-layer Image High-Quality Upscaling Technology, which combines advanced algorithms with deep learning-based image processing methods, promising improvements in both production efficiency and quality.
The patent for the AI de-aging technology is titled 'Method for Producing Images to Maintain De-aging Consistency for Video Sequences.' Unlike the previous method of processing de-aging effects individually for each frame, this technology automatically applies the de-aging effect to the entire video while achieving a natural and consistent appearance.
By focusing deep learning on 'keyframes' where expressions and lighting change significantly throughout the video, the results are applied to the remaining frames with similar structures, achieving a consistent de-aging effect across consecutive frames. Additionally, it matches the color distribution of the de-aged image's facial skin with the original's atmosphere and skin tone, excluding areas like the neck, shoulders, and hair.
Through personalization features, it can recognize age, gender, etc., to adjust the de-aging intensity, allowing for both aging and de-aging, thus accommodating scenes where the age drastically changes. This technology is being applied in projects such as global OTT platforms and can also be utilized for 'Face Swap,' changing the face and expressions of an actor to those of another.
The patent titled 'Method for Producing Images for High-Quality Upscaling of Multi-Layer Images' is an upscaling technology optimized for VFX and high-resolution content production. Unlike traditional single-image upscaling methods, this approach separates each layer (color, lighting, depth, position, etc.) of multi-layer images, such as EXR (Extended Range) format, and upscales them independently before reconstruction. Even when upscaling multi-layer images to super-resolution quality, where the characteristic data of each layer must be maintained, it can enhance texture and detail with high processing efficiency without data loss.
In addition, Dexter has newly registered a total of 4 patents, including 3D body profile production using full-body scanning and motion capture, and a shooting system utilizing digital humans in a virtual production environment. Numerous new VFX technologies, such as AI deep learning-based matchmoving technology and photogrammetry shooting automation technology, are also in the patent application process. An AI dedicated team composed of AI artists and AI engineers is operating, focusing on accumulating AI production know-how and developing new technologies such as generative AI.
Song Jae-won, head of Dexter's R&D Institute, stated, "Through this patented technology and numerous AI technologies directly linked to the VFX production pipeline, we are steadily increasing work efficiency and expanding the scope of technology application across various project areas such as films, dramas, and commercials," and added, "The resources secured through maximizing efficiency are being invested in securing a unique technological advantage, such as the development of a deep learning-based 'Digital Human Facial System' that can be utilized for leading characters."
