Singer-turned-businesswoman Hwang Hye-young is closing the shopping mall she has operated for 18 years.
On the 24th, Hwang Hye-young announced this fact through a video titled “Hwang Hye-young, I’m quitting the shopping mall I’ve run for 18 years. From a one-person company to an annual revenue of 10 billion won~” on her YouTube channel ‘This is Hwang Hye-young’.
In the video, she said, “I felt that it was time to stop running the shopping mall I’ve operated for 18 years, thinking ‘It’s time to quit’ and ‘I’ve done it for too long’.”
She continued, “Honestly, I wondered if I could still do it with the same passion as in the early days after so long, but I didn’t have the confidence,” adding, “As our twin children keep growing, I also wanted to focus on them as a working mom, which made me feel inadequate.” She also mentioned that she was physically exhausted.
When asked about the ‘highest daily sales’, she replied, “If we talk about annual revenue, it was close to 10 billion won, and the highest daily sales were 400 million won.”
Recalling her time away from broadcasting, she said, “I stayed at home for several years thinking it wasn’t suited for me, and while pondering ‘What can I do besides broadcasting?’, I started the shopping mall as a side job,” describing it as “like a child to me.”
She also confessed, “As I mentioned, I enjoyed a glamorous peak with an annual revenue of 10 billion won and maximum daily sales of 400 million won, but after experiencing pregnancy and hospitalizations, sales plummeted, and during that time, I paid the employees’ salaries out of my own pocket for two years.”
Hwang Hye-young endured moments when she “wanted to quit every day” and managed to last 18 years. In conclusion, she added, “I’ve worked so hard. Now I need time to take care of myself.”
Hwang Hye-young gave birth to twins after marrying politician Kim Kyung-rok and has been actively working as the CEO of an online shopping mall, gaining attention as a ‘working mom role model’.
