A couple who gave birth to the first naturally conceived quintuplets in Korea shares their birthing experience.
On the 28th at 8:45 PM, the tvN entertainment program ‘You Quiz on the Block’ will air the story of Kim Jun-young and Sa Gong-hye-ran, who gave birth to quadruplets against nearly impossible odds.
In a pre-released video, the quadruplets are seen on their first outing to ‘You Quiz’ just over 240 days after their birth.
The probability of conceiving quintuplets naturally is 1 in 65 million. Kim Jun-young and Sa Gong-hye-ran defied these astonishing odds and welcomed the first naturally conceived quintuplets in Korea on September 20 of last year.
Sa Gong-hye-ran, who is 151 cm tall, explained, “We said we would try to hold on until 27 weeks, but we couldn’t make it.” She underwent an emergency surgery just 6 days after reaching 26 weeks of pregnancy. The babies, born weighing less than 1 kg and not reaching 7 months, faced critical challenges in the neonatal intensive care unit.
The surgery itself was not easy. It involved a total of 32 medical professionals, including 9 from obstetrics and anesthesiology, 18 from pediatrics, and 5 for recording and checking the delivery situation.
Sa Gong-hye-ran's mother recalled in an interview, “Everyone waiting outside the operating room, including her husband and in-laws, kept saying, ‘It’s going to be okay now.’ But we didn’t hear any good news about our daughter.”
The mother, who could do nothing but repeat, “Is our daughter okay?” said, “After a while, they said my daughter was fine. Only then did I feel relieved and let out a sigh of relief,” showing her tears.
In addition to the couple's story, the program will also feature the family's perspective on the quadruplets and the story of that day shared by Professor Jeon Jong-kwan, an authority on multiple births at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital, which can be seen on ‘You Quiz on the Block’ airing on the 28th at 8:45 PM.
