SBS's current affairs program 'Curious Story Y' investigates the gun murder incident that occurred in Incheon.
On the 20th, a shooting incident occurred in an apartment complex in Songdo, Incheon, where a man in his 60s killed his son.
The tragedy began during a family gathering to celebrate the suspect's birthday, where his daughter-in-law and grandchildren were present. While sharing a cake, the man suddenly said he would go to a convenience store and left the house. Shortly after, he returned with a homemade shotgun and aimed it at his son. Tragically, his son, Mr. Jo, died from a gunshot wound.
After his arrest, police found 11 metal pipes corresponding to gun barrels and 86 live rounds in the suspect's trunk. This shocking incident occurred in what should have been the safest place, leaving the apartment residents in fear after hearing gunshots and the emergency broadcast late at night.
“I heard gunshots twice at night. I thought, 'I could die if things go wrong.'” - Apartment resident
Even more shocking is that before coming to his son's house on the day of the incident, the suspect had set up homemade explosives in his residence in Dobong-gu. The suspect, who was urgently arrested, stated to the police that he had set the bomb to explode at noon on the 21st.
Upon confirming this information, the police SWAT team quickly dispatched to remove the explosives, preventing what could have been a major disaster. Why did the suspect go to the extreme of making explosives after using a firearm, and why did he choose to install a homemade bomb in his own residence?
“First of all, there are no previous convictions related to firearms, and it has been confirmed that there is no history of mental illness.” - Briefing from the head of the criminal investigation department
The suspect, who committed this horrific crime, has remained tight-lipped, only stating it was due to 'family discord.' The suspect, who was neither under the influence of drugs nor alcohol at the time, raises the question of why he committed such an act. South Korea is no longer safe from gun incidents. Experts say that there is an urgent need to regulate homemade firearms.
What truth is the man in his 60s, who killed his son, hiding? You can find out on 'Curious Story Y' airing on the 25th at 8:50 PM.
