The Korea Choreography Copyright Association (hereinafter referred to as the Association) announced its official position on the appeal issued by four music organizations, including the Korea Management Federation, the Korea Entertainment Producers Association, the Korea Music Label Industry Association, and the Korea Music Content Association, on the 24th.
The Association expressed its agreement with the concerns of the four music organizations and hopes to continue constructive discussions based on mutual respect and cooperation for the common goal of developing the K-Pop industry. In particular, it emphasized that protecting the rights of choreographers contributes to enhancing the creativity and diversity of K-Pop, and it is important to create a healthy ecosystem where record producers and choreographers grow together.
The Association clearly stated that choreography copyright is a fundamental right of choreographers, and providing fair copyright compensation to choreographers is not merely an 'additional cost' but an 'essential investment' for the sustainable growth of the K-Pop industry. It also pointed out that dismissing the creative contributions of choreographers as mere 'services' could hinder the development of the K-Pop industry.
The Choreography Copyright Association anticipates that protecting choreography copyright will enhance K-Pop's international status and help protect rights in overseas markets. It also stated that it will seek common solutions for the development of the K-Pop industry by enhancing mutual understanding through constructive dialogue with music organizations.
To achieve both the protection of choreography copyright and the development of the K-Pop industry, the Association proposed four institutional improvements: ▲ Amending copyright laws to specify choreography as an independent work and clearly define the rights of choreographers ▲ Introducing standard contracts that include fair contract terms and revenue distribution methods ▲ Establishing a transparent and efficient choreography copyright management system ▲ Forming a consultative body involving various stakeholders, including record producers, choreographers, and platform operators.
The Choreography Copyright Association promised to do its best to grow and develop together with all members of the K-Pop industry.
