As the first domestic film utilizing AI, ‘Middle Earth’ has unveiled its secrets, and the actors have shared their thoughts on the frightening pace of AI technology development.
Director Kang Yoon-sung expressed his feelings at the press screening and conference for the film ‘Middle Earth’ (directed by Kang Yoon-sung) held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall on the afternoon of the 13th, saying, “I am particularly nervous and have many thoughts as I present a theatrical film after six years that utilizes AI technology. It’s a complicated feeling.”
While acknowledging the frightening pace of AI technology development, Director Kang stated, “I believe AI cannot replace actors.”
This is because each actor is a creator in their own right. Director Kang honestly shared, “I think AI cannot replace that area. Traditionally, we have used CGI for scenes where actors fly or have accidents. I believe those aspects will be replaced by AI.”
What do the actors think? First, Byun Yo-han remarked, “Today’s press conference feels like an AI hearing,” and added, “It feels like we are at the moment of finishing an experiment and receiving proof. While filming, I was curious and concerned about how AI would be utilized in the film industry and how far it could go. Ultimately, I believe that without the creativity of directors, actors, and staff, AI cannot exist.”
He continued, “The film industry is a battle against time and capital, and in that regard, I felt the efficiency.”
Kim Kang-woo shared, “Many people must be curious about how the scenes utilizing AI will be implemented. When smartphones first came out, there were questions about their necessity, but at some point, they became indispensable tools. I think AI will become like that, and as an actor, I felt scared.”
He expressed, “I was worried that our profession might disappear, but I agree that AI cannot replace actors yet.”
Bang Hyo-rin stated, “It was actually a task that required much more communication. We actively communicated with all staff, including filming, lighting, makeup, and sound. I had many discussions with the actors as well,” and explained, “Since there was a lot of reliance on imagination, I worked harder to express the delicacy of emotions and reactions.”
Lim Hyung-jun honestly shared, “In scenes that require a large crowd, I think AI could replace humans as a background. As the pace of AI development accelerates, it seems that actors need to study with the idea of collaborating with AI.”
‘Middle Earth’ is an action blockbuster that takes place in a space between the living and the dead, and it is the first feature commercial film in Korea to utilize AI technology.
It will be released on the 15th.
