It has unparalleled imagination, relatable stories, and timely messages. In an era longing for connection, Disney and Pixar's emotional adventure ‘Elio’ will be a comfort hotter than the summer heat.
11-year-old Elio, who lives with his aunt after the death of his parents, feels burdened by the thought of being a burden to her and wanders aimlessly, unable to truly integrate into his new family. Without family or friends, Elio, unable to find a place for his heart, refers to himself as an alien on Earth and concludes that his rightful place is in space.
He eagerly awaits the day he will be abducted by extraterrestrial beings. One day, this lonely boy, who felt ‘alone’ on Earth, is summoned to the real universe and meets a very special friend—Gloden, who understands his heart. They quickly open their hearts to each other, bonded by their shared experience of ‘loneliness’. They become irreplaceable friends, comforting and soothing one another.

Through these characters, the film conveys that the loneliness everyone feels is not a negative or unnecessary emotion. It offers warm comfort, suggesting that it may help one find their true place and realize the importance of those beside them, while also showing a shift in perspective.
The types and weights of loneliness vary for each individual, but for members of modern society, loneliness is an inseparable emotion. Especially for modern individuals exposed to the vastness of social media, who can communicate in real-time with anyone around the world, yet still live with ‘loneliness’, it prompts reflection on the meaning of ‘true connection’.
As director Madeline Sharafian hopes, “At the start of the movie, viewers may have a very pessimistic view of Earth and the possibility of happiness there, but I hope that by the time they leave the theater, their hearts will have changed.” The work fully conveys the power of ‘hope and connection’. It inspires courage to reach out to someone first and discover that possibility. The poignant aftertaste and enchanting mise-en-scène are also essential viewing points.
This theme is universal and timeless. It is enough to provide overwhelming emotion to anyone, regardless of age or gender. While posing serious questions about loneliness, it comforts everyone who has felt this emotion and surprises with a brilliant shift in perspective. There is certainly plenty to enjoy.
Filled with unique emotions and profound resonance, ‘Elio’ will be available on the 18th.
