Director Hong Sang-soo has been selected as a jury member for the 78th Cannes International Film Festival.
The Cannes Film Festival executive committee announced the jury members for this year's competition section on the official website on the 28th (local time).
This year's Cannes Film Festival will be chaired by French actress Juliette Binoche.
Along with Director Hong Sang-soo, the jury includes American actress and filmmaker Halle Berry, Indian director and screenwriter Payal Kapadia, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, Congolese director and documentary filmmaker Dieudo Hamadi, Mexican director and producer Carlos Reygadas, and American actor Jeremy Strong.
Previously, Korean jury members at the Cannes Film Festival have included actors Jeon Do-yeon, Song Kang-ho, director Park Chan-wook, director Lee Chang-dong, and director Shin Sang-ok. Director Hong Sang-soo becomes the sixth jury member from Korea.
The Cannes Film Festival introduced Director Hong Sang-soo by stating, “A prolific director who has received numerous international awards, Hong Sang-soo is a familiar figure at the Cannes Film Festival, having chosen Cannes as the backdrop for his film 'Claire's Camera.'” It added, “Hong has continuously evolved while maintaining the concise and intimate atmosphere that characterizes his cinematic style.”
This year's Cannes Film Festival will open on May 13 and take place in the Cannes area of southern France until the 24th. This year, no Korean films have been invited to the official section.
