The film ‘Showing Up’ has been selected as the first artist merchandise of the new year by CGV Art House ahead of its release.
‘Showing Up’ tells the story of local artist ‘Lizzie’ (Michelle Williams) preparing for an exhibition while discovering small salvations amidst the big and small problems of everyday life. This film is produced by A24 and is a collaboration between director Kelly Reichardt, known for her distinctive presence in the American independent film scene with ‘First Cow’, and her muse, Michelle Williams.
After competing in the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, it was ranked 10th in the ‘Film of the Year’ list by Cahiers du Cinéma in 2023, selected as one of the top 10 independent films by the National Society of Film Critics, and ranked 5th in the ‘Personal List’ released annually by the Korean Film Archive, receiving attention from various film festivals and media.
Foreign media have also praised it, stating, “There is no better film this year (2023)” (New York Magazine) and “A surprising delight with subtle emotion” (Los Angeles Times).
The artist merchandise features a badge depicting the protagonist sculpting a piece, set against a palette covered in various colors of paint.
Throughout the film, the serious side of the protagonist ‘Lizzie’ is portrayed as she creates her work for the upcoming exhibition, despite being stressed by work, family issues, and a broken water heater. Her struggles to balance her artistic endeavors and life are likely to resonate with and evoke empathy from all of us living in modern times.
Moreover, the coincidental events that occur in the latter part of the film are expected to provide refreshing healing, raising anticipation even further. The artist merchandise will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis exclusively to ‘Artist Level’ members at CGV Art House theaters nationwide starting from the film's release date on January 8.
Scheduled for release on January 8.
