Disney's new release ‘Moana 2’ has topped the box office in its opening weekend.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system, ‘Moana 2’ (directed by David G. Derrick Jr.) attracted 1,071,072 viewers over the weekend (November 29 to December 1), securing the top spot. The cumulative audience count is 1,368,433.
‘Moana 2’ follows Moana, who receives an unexpected call from her ancestors, embarking on a perilous adventure with the legendary hero Maui and new crew members to break the curse of a hidden ancient island in order to save her tribe from destruction. It has already surpassed 1 million viewers in its opening weekend, marking a successful box office run.
The film is also receiving explosive responses overseas. According to Box Office Mojo, ‘Moana 2’ achieved a box office revenue of $221 million (approximately 308.6 billion won) during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend after its North American release, ranking first.
In second place is the musical film ‘Wicked’ (directed by Jon M. Chu). During the same period, it attracted 334,624 viewers, bringing its cumulative audience count to 1,195,754.
‘Wicked’ depicts the unexpected crises and adventures faced by two very different characters, Elphaba, who has yet to discover her true power, and Glinda, who has not yet realized her true nature, as they build a friendship. The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
In third place is ‘Hidden Face’ (directed by Kim Dae-woo), starring Song Seung-heon, Jo Yeo-jeong, and Park Ji-hyun. It attracted 209,131 viewers, with a cumulative audience count of 725,564. The film's break-even point is approximately 1.5 million.
‘Hidden Face’ is a unique thriller where Seong-jin, who is searching for his missing fiancée Soo-yeon, encounters Soo-yeon's junior Mi-joo, and witnesses the unmasked truth of Soo-yeon, who is trapped in a secret space closest to them.
Currently, the ranking for advance ticket sales shows ‘1 Win’ (17.5%) starring Song Kang-ho, Park Jung-min, and Jang Yoon-ju in first place. In second place is ‘Firefighter’ (15.2%) directed by Kwak Kyung-taek, and in third place is ‘Moana 2’ (14.7%).
