Actor Youn Yuh-jung has recently attracted attention by revealing that her eldest son got married to a same-sex partner in the U.S., stating, "Korea should be like the U.S." in a candid remark.
Youn Yuh-jung attended a press conference for the film "Wedding Ceremony" (directed by Andrew Ahn) held at the Busan Cinema Center's BIFF Hall in Haeundae, Busan on the 19th.
This film, officially invited to the "World Cinema" section of this year's Busan International Film Festival, features a comedy that unfolds with the unexpected appearance of a sharp-witted grandmother as two same-sex couples plan a fake wedding. It is a remake of the film of the same name that won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1993, directed by Ang Lee.
Youn Yuh-jung plays the role of grandmother "Ja-young," who embraces her gay grandson "Min" (Han Ki-chan), portraying a "K-grandmother" who wraps her family in warmth despite discrimination and prejudice.
Earlier, in an interview with foreign media regarding "Wedding Ceremony," Youn Yuh-jung revealed that her eldest son is gay and got married to a same-sex partner in the U.S., and she openly shared her thoughts during the press conference as well.
When asked by a foreign reporter about the perception of homosexuality in Korea, she replied, "Korea is still conservative on such issues. I hope Korea can move forward a bit more."
She continued, "Whether gay or straight, everyone is equal," adding, "I think we should be like the U.S., but we are not there yet. Korea is a very conservative country. I know this well because I have lived here for 79 years."
Additionally, she emphasized, "I do not encourage categorizing and labeling. We are all human."
The Busan International Film Festival, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, opened on the 17th and will run until the 26th at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae. It will showcase 328 works from 64 countries.
