A Korean actor has made headlines by becoming the first to take the lead role in a Spanish commercial feature film.
According to the webtoon and broadcasting industry on the 20th, Korean soccer player and actor Yang Jae-woo (24) has been cast as the male lead, Kang, in the Spanish film 'Sigue Mi Voz' (Follow My Voice). While there have been instances of Korean actors appearing in supporting roles in Spanish commercial films, this is the first time a Korean actor has taken on a lead role.
It is rumored that Yang Jae-woo's casting reflects the original setting. The male lead, Kang, in the web novel of the same name is Korean, and the production company held open auditions to maintain this setting. Notably, they were looking for a Korean actor who could speak Spanish like a local.
Yang Jae-woo is a former soccer player currently active in Spain. He moved to Spain at the age of 11 after receiving an offer to join the Villarreal youth team in 2012, and he currently plays for Mostoles CF. He also serves as the coach of the Mostoles URJC youth team. Yang Jae-woo expressed his feelings, saying, “A fan informed me about the movie audition announcement, and I applied out of curiosity. I’m happy to have been accepted.”
'Sigue Mi Voz' is a romance film that depicts the process of the female lead, Clara, who, after being holed up at home for 76 days listening only to the radio, becomes captivated by the voice of late-night radio host Kang and steps out into the world. The original work was written in Spanish by Venezuelan author Ariana Godoy and has garnered 36.8 million views on the global platform Wattpad.
This film is co-produced by Naver Webtoon’s affiliated webtoon production (formerly Wattpad Webtoon Studio) and Spanish companies Zeta Studios and Beta Fiction. The webtoon production is currently creating various video content based on both Korean and overseas IPs.
Recently, they presented the Netflix series 'Bad Influence'. In addition, they are producing the 'Through My Window' trilogy, the Thai drama 'Beauty Newbie', and the Indonesian series 'Turn On'.
