The police investigating the death of a patient at a hospital operated by psychiatrist and broadcaster Yang Jae-woong have filed additional charges against four hospital officials.
The Southern Gyeonggi Police Agency's Criminal Investigation Unit announced on the 19th that they have charged four nursing staff, including an individual referred to as A, at the hospital located in Bucheon, which is operated by Yang Jae-woong, for violating medical laws.
A and others are suspected of engaging in unlicensed medical practices, such as providing patients with medications that were not prescribed by a doctor. With this, the total number of individuals charged in this case has increased to 11, including Yang Jae-woong.
The police plan to summon Yang Jae-woong, who is facing charges of violating medical laws, negligent homicide, and abandonment leading to death, as a suspect for questioning as early as this week. After completing the investigation into Yang Jae-woong, the police are expected to decide whether to refer the case.
On May 27 of last year, a woman in her 30s, referred to as B, died while hospitalized for treatment of diet pill addiction at the hospital where Yang Jae-woong serves as director.
The family of the deceased has filed a lawsuit against Yang Jae-woong and other hospital officials, claiming that B was subjected to improper isolation and coercion during her hospitalization, and that she did not receive appropriate medical care, leading to her death.
The police have been conducting an investigation, including a search of Yang Jae-woong's hospital in April and obtaining evaluations from the Medical Dispute Mediation Agency regarding conflicting claims.
Meanwhile, Yang Jae-woong was set to marry actress Hani, formerly of the group EXID, in September of last year, but the wedding has been indefinitely postponed due to this incident.
