Director Park Chan-wook stated regarding his expulsion from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) that "there are no restrictions on activities."
On the morning of the 19th, at the production report for his new film "There’s Nothing I Can Do" held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Yongsan, Seoul, Director Park said, "I have no additional statement beyond what I previously expressed through the production company. There is nothing more to add," but he emphasized, "There are no restrictions or limitations on my activities as a writer."
Previously, Director Park and Don McKellar were expelled from the WGA for writing the HBO drama series "The Sympathizer" during the WGA strike in 2023. At that time, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) went on a six-month strike, halting all productions in Hollywood.
In relation to this, Park Chan-wook's production company Moho Film stated, "In December 2024, the WGA began an investigation into violations of strike rules, and the committee composed of fellow writers determined through hearings that the violations were not intentional and stemmed from misunderstandings regarding roles during the post-production process, recommending only a private warning. However, in April 2025, the WGA board expelled the two without following the committee's recommendations or providing specific explanations."
They also added, "We seriously considered appealing, but since writing activities are possible even without being a member, and to focus on 'There’s Nothing I Can Do,' which was in post-production in Korea at the time, we ultimately decided not to appeal as we could not spend as much time on the appeal as we would have on the hearings."
"There’s Nothing I Can Do" is a bittersweet mystery drama that tells the story of an office worker, "Mansu" (Lee Byung-hun), who felt satisfied with life to the point of thinking "I have achieved everything," but suddenly gets fired and prepares for his own war towards re-employment to protect his wife and two children and to keep the house he worked hard to acquire.
It has been invited to compete in the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and has also been selected as the opening film for this year's Busan International Film Festival. Additionally, it has been officially invited to the 50th Toronto International Film Festival and the 63rd New York Film Festival, continuing to attract global attention.
Starring Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, and Cha Seung-won, it is set to be released in September.
