Actors Yeo Su-jeong, Joo Jin-mo, Sung Byeong-sook, Lee Seong-yong, and Hwang Geon, among others, will share the stage. Those participating in the play ‘Coriolanus’ to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Korea University are receiving great expectations from theater fans as a ‘dream lineup’.
Notably, most of the cast members in this performance are alumni of Korea University's prestigious theater group, the Korea University Theater Association. The alumni, known as the cradle of theater history, are coming together to create a ‘homecoming’ stage to celebrate their alma mater's 120th anniversary. Esteemed acting seniors and actively working juniors will gather to present a cross-generational ensemble.
The core of the play will be taken on by seasoned actors. Lee Seong-yong will play the role of ‘Menenius’, the protagonist's spiritual support, while Hwang Geon will portray ‘Aufidius’, the protagonist's arch-nemesis, creating a tense atmosphere. Additionally, actress and producer Won Young-ae will join as the strong mother ‘Volumnia’. The role of the protagonist ‘Coriolanus’ will be played by newcomer Moon Byeong-seol, who will showcase a spirited performance.
This performance also features a special family actor combination that draws attention. Sung Byeong-sook will share the stage with her daughter Seo Song-hee for the first time in six years, with the mother playing ‘Mother of the Citizens’ and the daughter taking on the role of the ‘Tribune’ who leads the protagonist to ruin, promising an interesting acting synergy. Additionally, Yoo Hae-moo, who has worked as a voice actor for a lifetime, will make a special appearance as ‘Senator’ due to his connection with the Korea University Theater members, adding significance to the performance.
The direction is led by Lee Hyun-woo, a top Shakespeare expert in Korea, who is a professor at Soonchunhyang University. This stage features a bold concept of ‘a modern video studio filming ancient Rome’, where two cameramen will capture the actors on stage in real-time, sensibly unfolding the heavy theme that ‘history repeats itself’.
The play ‘Coriolanus’ will be performed from September 6 to 14 at the Seoul Theater 202 of the Seoul Theater Creation Center. Tickets are currently available for purchase through Interpark, with early booking discounts ending on August 20.
