Disney+ has revealed the casting lineup for 'Goldland'.
'Goldland' tells the story of Hee-joo (played by Park Bo-young), who accidentally comes into possession of gold bars from a smuggling organization, and her struggle against the greed and betrayal of various characters entangled in a chaotic situation surrounding the gold bars.
First, the irreplaceable actress Park Bo-young takes on the role of Kim Hee-joo, who fights to protect the gold bars and leads the narrative. Hee-joo is a security officer at an international airport who gets embroiled in an illegal gold smuggling case. Park Bo-young expressed her excitement about participating in 'Goldland', stating, "I am looking forward to challenging myself in a new genre. The process of Hee-joo, who seems uninterested in gold bars, being captivated by human nature and desire will be portrayed attractively," hinting at her acting transformation.
Actor Kim Sung-cheol, who has showcased his versatility across genres from the film 'The Outlaws' and 'Comment Army' to the drama 'Hell Season 2' and the musical 'Jekyll and Hyde', will play the role of Jang Wook, a low-level member of a loan shark organization known as 'Woo-gi'. He approaches Hee-joo, knowing she possesses the illegal smuggled goods, pretending to help her while creating tension with his actions and gaze that suggest he might reach for the gold bars at any moment. Kim Sung-cheol's unique acting skills are expected to shine through this role.
Kim Sung-cheol shared, "The character Woo-gi has many challenging aspects, and I feel I can show a new side of myself. I am looking forward to the chemistry created with Hee-joo," expressing his anticipation for his acting partnership with Park Bo-young.
Actor Lee Hyun-wook, who has received much love through films like 'The Architect' and dramas such as 'Shark: The Storm' and 'Wongyeong', will portray Lee Do-kyung, a co-pilot who is also Hee-joo's lover and inadvertently drags her into the illegal gold smuggling case. The ambiguous emotional line regarding whether Do-kyung genuinely loves Hee-joo or is using her as a means to an end is expected to be another point of interest. Lee Hyun-wook stated, "I had high expectations after reading the fresh material of the script. With overseas location shooting planned, I believe we can present a variety of visual experiences," expressing his excitement for the project.
Additionally, Kim Hee-won, who gained recognition for his directing skills in Disney+'s original series 'Lighting Store', returns to acting. He will play Kim Jin-man, a detective in the violent crimes unit at Jeongsan Police Station, proving his presence as a reliable actor. Kim Hee-won mentioned, "I am continuously researching the character Jin-man through many discussions with the director. I am contemplating the incidents Jin-man will experience, the emotional flow, and the actions he can take as a detective."
Moon Jung-hee, who has showcased solid acting skills through films like 'The Game' and dramas such as 'The 8 Show', will take on the role of Yeo Seon-ok, Hee-joo's mother, portraying a complex mother-daughter relationship with Park Bo-young. Moon Jung-hee expressed, "I have always been impressed by Director Kim Sung-hoon's unique works. I have high expectations for this project as well, as the director's style is well reflected," showing her trust in the director's abilities.
Moreover, actor Lee Kwang-soo, who has been making bold acting transformations through dramas like 'Bad Relationship' and 'No Way Out: The Roulette', will play Director Park, who manages 'Geumseong', a lower organization of the hotel casino Goldland. Lee Kwang-soo stated, "The script was interesting for everyone, regardless of age. Every character has a vivid charm, and I am thinking a lot about how to express those emotions well," raising expectations for the project.
'Goldland' is further anticipated as it brings together director Kim Sung-hoon, known for his stylish genre direction in films like 'Confidential Assignment' and 'Rampant', and writer Hwang Jo-yoon, who penned films like 'Rampant', 'Memories of the Murderer', 'Masquerade', and 'Oldboy'.
'Goldland' is set to be released worldwide exclusively on Disney+ in 2026.
