Comedian Kim Sook reminisced about her wandering days due to stock investments and gaming addiction.
On the 4th, Kim Sook appeared as a guest on tvN’s ‘You Quiz on the Block’.
On that day, Yoo Jae-suk recalled, “I was in KBS’s 7th recruitment, and Kim Sook was in the 12th. In fact, Kim Sook’s nickname back then was ‘Dorae’ (fool). She didn’t try to act like a fool on purpose. She spoke rationally.” Jo Se-ho chimed in, “Isn’t Kim Sook’s errand for cigarettes a very famous episode?”
Yoo Jae-suk said, “Back then, seniors often asked juniors to run errands for cigarettes. One senior gave Kim Sook a 100,000 won check and said, ‘Buy me some cigarettes,’ and she came back with 100,000 won worth.” Kim Sook added, “It was 100 packs. I bought 10 cartons. I wanted my senior to smoke a lot of his favorite cigarettes.” Yoo Jae-suk laughed, saying, “This was sensational.”
Kim Sook described her first impression of Yoo Jae-suk, saying, “Yoo Jae-suk was a senior I wanted to help. I felt sorry for him. No one bullied him, but he was always alone in the corner. In old photos, Yoo Jae-suk is always in the corner. He couldn’t hold the middle ground.” Yoo Jae-suk admitted, “It was a time when I was feeling small.”
Yoo Jae-suk said, “Although Kim Sook was nicknamed ‘Dorae’, she was more diligent and consistent than I thought. Kim Sook lived really hard. She did a lot of side jobs.” Kim Sook shared, “At that time, I thought it was hard to make a living from broadcasting. I couldn’t just wait for casting, so I thought I should do side jobs. So, I opened a clothing store at Ewha Womans University. That’s when I realized my nature. I realized, ‘I dislike people.’ I had no confidence to face customers, so I watched our store from a café across the street. Eventually, I closed the clothing store after two months.”
Later, Kim Sook mentioned that she got involved in stocks, saying, “I was going to buy a compact car with 6 million won in savings when I met a writer. The writer recommended stocks, saying, ‘Just put it in for 4 months, and we’ll get a Grandeur.’ I trusted him because he was a senior, but my 6 million won turned into 200,000 won.”
Kim Sook also fell into gaming addiction. She said, “At that time, I had 2 trillion won in gaming assets. I played various games.” She continued, “I had about 4 computers at home. I was really addicted back then. I stayed up all night and went to sleep around 10 AM. Then I would wake up in the evening to eat. I spent my youthful years of 25-26 in a dark period.”
She then shared, “One day, I was shocked when I saw my reflection in the mirror. My whole face was in shadow. I was young, but my face looked ruined. I wondered if this was me, so I quit drinking, smoking, and gaming. From that time on, I started living diligently.”
Kim Sook confessed, “I wanted to work, but since I wasn’t getting any offers, I think I was sulking at the broadcasting station. I always lived within 10 minutes of the broadcasting station. I said, ‘I don’t need to broadcast,’ but I kept moving around Yeouido.”
