Actor Park Byeong-eun (47) did not hold back in praising his co-stars Seol Kyung-gu and Park Eun-bin in Disney Plus's ‘Hyperknife’.
On the 14th, during a meeting with Star Today at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Park Byeong-eun expressed his joy in working with his long-time admired senior Seol Kyung-gu, saying, “I was happy to work with Seol Kyung-gu, whom I have always liked and respected,” and added, “It was my first time working with Park Eun-bin, and I was amazed by her great energy, attitude as an actress, and her spectrum. I feel proud that the work itself has been well received by many people,” reflecting on the conclusion of the series.
He emphasized that this project was “a work that I studied a lot.” He continued, “Each actor has a different way of thinking and interpreting each scene. Seol Kyung-gu and Park Eun-bin express the dual emotions of restraint and explosion very well. I learned a lot by watching the two of them.”
‘Hyperknife’ is a medical thriller that depicts the fierce confrontation between ‘Jung Se-ok’ (Park Eun-bin), a once-promising genius doctor, and her mentor ‘Choi Deok-hee’ (Seol Kyung-gu), who brought her to ruin. It concluded on the 9th with a total of 8 episodes.
In the drama, Park Byeong-eun played Han Hyun-ho, a doctor full of humanistic beliefs from a university hospital. He lingers around Jung Se-ok, lamenting her surgical skills. He is a crucial figure who helps Jung Se-ok as an anesthesiologist.
While condoning and assisting Park Eun-bin (Se-ok) in her illegal surgeries as a shadow doctor, he also provides her with realistic advice. He plays a supportive partner who helps maintain balance between Park Eun-bin and Yoon Chan-young (Seo Young-joo), leading them while also backing them up from behind.
Park Byeong-eun praised Seol Kyung-gu extensively. He said, “I learned a lot from the senior in both external and internal aspects. Externally, he is a high-class in self-management. When we had morning shoots, he would manage himself 2-3 hours in advance to completely reduce any swelling in his face. I remember the senior saying, ‘I really dislike going to the filming set unprepared for acting.’ That’s why I started running too,” he shared.
Internally, he reflected, “I imagined how to express certain parts by watching the senior’s acting, but seeing him interpret it completely differently made me realize that it can be interpreted that way too. I thought he was truly a master among masters.”
Additionally, regarding Park Eun-bin, he remarked, “She is a truly intelligent actress. I was amazed by how she provided clear answers when problems arose on set.” He continued, “The phrase ‘acting without holding back’ seems to apply to Park Eun-bin. She was a very professional actress. I learned a lot from her.”
Han Hyun-ho showed a human side as a colleague and junior doctor who sincerely recommends treatment next to Choi Deok-hee. Moreover, Park Byeong-eun heightened the dramatic tension through Han Hyun-ho, while also lightening the heavy atmosphere, earning the support of viewers. The character's warm and human side provided stability amidst the dopamine-filled situations, refreshing the flow of the story.
Park Byeong-eun stated, “I really researched my character. If there is a Season 2, I would like to amplify Han Hyun-ho and develop the character further.”
Park Byeong-eun is communicating with the public through a variety of works, including ‘Black Box on Earth’, ‘Seonsan’, ‘Hyperknife’, ‘Citizen Deok-hee’, ‘Don’t Touch Dirty Money’, and ‘Lobby’. Does he have any criteria for choosing projects?
Park Byeong-eun explained, “Above all, the script has to be interesting for me to choose it. I don’t select a project just because my character is attractive if the script itself is not interesting. I think it’s good when the actors and the story come together in an overall interesting way. That way, there’s something to learn during filming, and it’s enjoyable.”
In fact, Park Byeong-eun joined this project not through casting but by directly reaching out. He revealed, “After reading the script, I contacted the director directly because I wanted to be part of it. The director said it was difficult to give me a role because my part was small. However, I really liked the character, and as trust built up, I was able to enjoy filming.”
Park Byeong-eun expressed a strong desire for ‘Hyperknife’ Season 2. During the interview, he mentioned Season 2 more than three times. “If there is a Season 2, I want to expand my role.” As this statement was repeated, the reporters laughed at his enthusiasm for Season 2, recalling his earlier comments.
Having showcased his passionate performance in ‘Hyperknife’, Park Byeong-eun is also set to shine in the upcoming Netflix original ‘Tangeum’. He will play the role of Shim Yeol-guk, the biological father of actors Lee Jae-wook (Hong-rang) and Jo Bo-ah (Jae-i), as well as the head of a gang, making cold choices for his ambitions, promising to present another unique side of himself.
