Rookie Hong Min-ki has captured attention with his remarkable presence in 'Study Group'.
Tving's original series 'Study Group' (directed by Lee Jang-hoon and Yoo Beom-sang, written by Eom Seon-ho and Oh Bo-hyun, planned by Studio Dragon, produced by Wylap Flex, provided by Tving) is an action comedy that depicts the bloody entrance exam story of a boy, Yoon Ga-min, who wants to study well but has a talent only for fighting, as he forms a study group at the worst school on earth. Upon its release, it has garnered attention as a well-made action drama with the dynamic performances of its unique characters and high-quality action. In particular, rookie Hong Min-ki's performance as 'Park Geon-yeop' stands out.
In episodes 1 and 2 of 'Study Group', released on the 23rd, Hong Min-ki's portrayal of Park Geon-yeop showcased his diverse facets. When the newly appointed temporary teacher Lee Han-gyeong (played by Han Ji-eun) was struggling to move a drum can alone, Park Geon-yeop quietly approached to lend a helping hand, drawing attention with his indifferent comfort, saying, "Just because you work hard alone, the school won't change."
Additionally, under Lee Han-gyeong's support, Yoon Ga-min (played by Hwang Min-hyun) formed a study group with Kim Se-hyun (played by Lee Jong-hyun), leading to conflicts with Pi Han-ul (played by Cha Woo-min), who was not pleased with this. At the moment when Lee Hyun-woo (played by Park Yoon-ho) attacked Lee Han-gyeong's house on Pi Han-ul's orders, Park Geon-yeop appeared and saved Lee Han-gyeong, showcasing his amazing action skills during the ensuing chase and confrontation with the bullies, instantly capturing the viewers' attention.
In particular, the scene where Park Geon-yeop is attacked and falls down after being focused on by Lee Hyun-woo's group amplifies the immersion by hinting at his weaknesses and the character's wounds. Park Geon-yeop, seemingly aware of his past, aggressively pressed Lee Hyun-woo to reveal what he knows about Pi Han-ul, and when Yoon Ga-min, who came to save Lee Han-gyeong, tried to stop him, he revealed his hidden story by saying, "You want me to tone it down? My mom is dead!" heightening the emotional tension of the drama.
Despite the high expectations from fans of the original work, Hong Min-ki perfectly embodied the character with his unique interpretation and immersion, playing a crucial role in the drama. In particular, the character 'Park Geon-yeop' required both delicate inner acting and thrilling action. Hong Min-ki achieved a 200% synchronization with the character, earning praise for his performance.
Moreover, his sharp gaze, sturdy physique, and warm visuals maximized the charm of the Park Geon-yeop character, capturing the viewers' attention. His mere presence heightened the tension of the drama and successfully increased the immersion.
Thus, despite being a newcomer, Hong Min-ki is showing remarkable growth and is emerging as a "next-generation actor." As his passion and potential captivate both the public and the industry, attention is focused on what kind of performance he will showcase in 'Study Group' and how he will establish his position as an actor in the future.
