MBC's investigative program ‘Straight’ sheds light on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol.

The MBC current affairs program ‘Straight’, airing on the 15th at 8:20 PM, will be themed ‘Reunited with Democracy, the Impeachment is Not Over Yet’.

“I declare that it has been passed.”

The impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol has finally passed the National Assembly. Cheers erupted from the hundreds of thousands gathered in front of the National Assembly. The president's duties were immediately suspended. 204 votes in favor, 85 against, and 11 abstentions or invalid votes. At least 12 members of the People Power Party defied the party line and voted in favor. Just a week ago, the People Power Party had collectively boycotted the plenary session, while President Yoon justified the martial law in a 29-minute address. The angry public sentiment raised critical voices, and ultimately, there was no way to ignore this sentiment.

Irresponsible People

The government and ruling party showed an irresponsible attitude regarding the declaration of martial law. On the day of the martial law declaration, the ministers who attended a poorly organized cabinet meeting were unable to properly oppose it and were powerless. People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon displayed a wavering attitude regarding the impeachment of the president. The joint governance plan proposed by the Prime Minister and the ruling party leader, which lacked legal grounds, quickly lost power as President Yoon exercised his personnel authority. Some ruling party members even repeated Chun Doo-hwan's logic that “martial law is an act of governance.”

Accelerating Investigation into ‘Rebellion’ Charges

President Yoon Suk-yeol's 12.12 address. He admitted to ordering the deployment of military personnel to the election commission and appeared to be swayed by the far-right YouTubers' narrative of election fraud. He denied attempts to incapacitate the National Assembly and orders to arrest politicians, but content contrary to the president's explanations has been continuously exposed within the military and police. There are evaluations that he has effectively confessed to ‘rebellion’. Following the Minister of National Defense, commanders involved in the martial law, as well as the Chief of Police and the Chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, have been arrested. Now, the investigation is directly targeting President Yoon.
