The hat worn by BTS member Jungkook, which has come under scrutiny, has been revealed to be a gift from a friend.
According to an investigation by Maeil Business Newspaper's Star Today on the 14th, the hat worn by Jungkook, which features right-wing slogans from Japan, was confirmed to have been received from a friend rather than purchased directly.
On the afternoon of the 13th, Jungkook appeared as a guest at BTS member J-Hope's world tour encore concert held at Goyang Sports Complex in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province. Prior to this, he conducted a stage rehearsal, during which the phrase on the hat he wore drew criticism.
The hat had the phrase ‘MAKE TOKYO GREAT AGAIN’ inscribed on it. This expression is a slogan used by right-wing Japanese individuals. It can evoke memories of ‘Imperial Japan’ and the glorification of the Japanese colonial period, making it a sensitive phrase historically for Korea and several Southeast Asian countries that experienced colonial rule.
As the controversy continued, Jungkook expressed his apologies through the fan communication platform Weverse shortly after the performance, stating, “I sincerely apologize for disappointing and causing discomfort to many due to the phrase on the hat I wore during the rehearsal. I take seriously the disappointment and hurt caused by my lack of understanding of the historical and political significance of the phrase, and I accept it with a heavy heart.”
He added, “I am simply sorry. There is no excuse for any reason. I was lacking and careless. I will think and act more deeply about everything in the future. I will humbly accept all criticisms and points out regarding my mistake.”
Jungkook stated that he immediately disposed of the hat.

Regarding the controversy, some fans view it as a pure artist's fashion without any particular intent, while others have expressed negative reactions, arguing that it reflects a lack of awareness of history as a Korean and K-pop artist.
The phrase is sensitive as it suggests a political inclination, reminiscent of former U.S. President Donald Trump's campaign slogan ‘MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN’. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol also wore a hat with the phrase ‘MAKE KOREA GREAT AGAIN’ while embracing supporters during his departure from the presidential residence last April.
Ultimately, it seems that Jungkook quickly issued an apology as the controversy spread widely.
On the 11th, Jungkook, who was discharged from the military, took the stage at J-Hope's concert, passionately performing his solo song ‘Seven’ and interacting with fans. On stage, Jungkook shared, “Old memories are coming back, but it feels so new. I’m happy to be able to perform. I really missed the fans.”
