The film 'Pakwah' (directed by Min Kyu-dong), officially invited to the Berlinale Special section of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, will meet domestic audiences in theaters this May after receiving rave reviews overseas.
On the 19th, the distributor NEW announced, “'Pakwah' has successfully completed its red carpet and world premiere screening at the Berlin International Film Festival, and its release in May has been confirmed.”
The film depicts a thrilling bloody confrontation between 'Sculptor', a legendary killer who has been active in 'Divine Pest Control' for 40 years, and a mysterious killer 'Bullfighter' who is chasing him. It stars Lee Hye-young, Kim Sung-cheol, Yeon Woo-jin, Kim Mu-yeol, and Cynthia.
The world premiere screening at the Berlin International Film Festival, where audiences were able to see the work for the first time globally, reportedly drew applause and cheers from a packed audience. Director Min Kyu-dong, along with Lee Hye-young and Kim Sung-cheol, personally thanked the audience and responded to their cheers.
On that day, Tricia Tuttle, the executive director of the Berlin International Film Festival, praised, “We were amazed by the overwhelming performances.”
Positive reviews from major international media followed after watching the film. ScreenDaily stated, “The intense action and emotional elements blend intriguingly, and the orchestral music is overwhelming. The protagonist in her 60s is impressive enough to catch the attention of the film industry. The final scene is captivating among numerous action scenes,” praising the direction, acting, action, and music.
The Hollywood Reporter described it as “a work by veteran director Min Kyu-dong that conquers all genres, depicting a meditation on the loneliness of aging,” while the Hollywood outlet Variety commented, “A work that remixes familiarity in a new way.”
'Pakwah' will be available in May.
