The musical film ‘Wicked’ is currently monopolizing the box office throne.
According to the integrated computer network of the Korean Film Council on the 26th, ‘Wicked’ (directed by Jon Chu) attracted 54,902 viewers the previous day, bringing its total audience to 706,188.
‘Wicked’, which premiered in South Korea as the first in the world, attracted 84,932 viewers on its opening day, surpassing the opening audience numbers of the musical blockbuster ‘Aladdin’ (2019) with 72,736 viewers and ‘Moana’ (2017) with 84,797 viewers. It is on a rapid rise, drawing 500,000 viewers over its opening weekend.
‘Wicked’ tells the story of two very different characters, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who has yet to discover her true power, and Glinda (Ariana Grande), who has not yet found her true nature, as they build a friendship while facing unexpected crises and adventures.
In second place is ‘Hidden Face’ (directed by Kim Dae-woo), which attracted 40,045 viewers, bringing its total audience to 394,464.
Starring actors Jo Yeo-jeong, Song Seung-heon, and Park Ji-hyun, ‘Hidden Face’ is a unique thriller that unfolds as Seong-jin, who is searching for his missing fiancée Su-yeon, encounters Su-yeon's junior Mi-joo, and witnesses Su-yeon, who was thought to be missing, trapped in a secret space closest to them.
In third place is ‘Gladiator 2’ (directed by Ridley Scott), which attracted 17,162 viewers, bringing its total audience to 745,428.
‘Gladiator 2’ is a sequel to ‘Gladiator’ (2000), set 17 years after the events of the first film. Actor Paul Mescal, who gained attention for ‘Aftersun’ (2022), plays the lead role of Hano. Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal also star.
In fourth place is ‘Cheongseol’ (directed by Jo Seon-ho), which attracted 11,744 viewers, bringing its total audience to 715,028.
‘Cheongseol’, a remake of the Taiwanese film of the same name, captures the refreshing and exciting moments of Yong-jun, who is head over heels in love, and Summer, who is getting to know his true feelings, along with their supportive younger sibling Autumn. Actors Hong Kyung, Noh Yoon-seo, and Kim Min-joo star in the film.
Currently, the ranking of pre-sale audience numbers is led by ‘Moana 2’ (35.4%), followed by ‘Wicked’ (15.1%), and ‘One Win’ (8.0%).
