Singer Roy Kim (real name Kim Sang-woo) revealed the unfair experiences he faced during his military service in the Marine Corps.
On the 19th, the YouTube channel ‘Pisik University’ released a video titled “Asking Roy Kim what love means to him.”
On that day, Roy Kim mentioned his enlistment in the Marine Corps in 2020, saying, “It had been on my bucket list for a long time. My three closest friends and I had planned to enlist in the Marine Corps together when we turned 20. This was before I appeared on ‘Superstar K’.”
He continued, “I couldn’t keep that promise because I ended up appearing on ‘Superstar K’. My friends had to go to the military in their early 20s, while I postponed it until my late 20s. So, when I finally went to the military, I naturally ended up in the Marine Corps.”
When asked if he ever regretted it, he replied, “Honestly, no. Because it would have been just as tough if I had gone to the Army, Navy, or Air Force,” but added, “During my service, it wasn’t regret, but there were some really frustrating experiences that I encountered for the first time in my life.”
He continued, “This isn’t a problem specific to the Marine Corps. I went to the military later than others. There was a sergeant who was on the phone with his girlfriend. He said, ‘Hey, Roy Kim is right in front of me. Hey! Kim Sang-woo, sing something.’ At that moment, while others might have regretted it, I immediately sang ‘Spring Spring Spring’. This was one of those proud moments in the Marine Corps for me,” showcasing his ability to handle the situation.
Meanwhile, Roy Kim won the Mnet ‘Superstar K4’ in 2012. The following year, he debuted with the release of ‘Spring Spring Spring’. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2020 and was discharged in 2022. He will release a digital single titled ‘I Can’t Express It’ on the 27th.
