Actor Lee Byung-hun made a serious comment about 'motherhood' at the official event for his new work 'I Can't Help It', saying, "I noticed that Son Ye-jin didn't answer any questions about the child actor..." This remark led to a controversy regarding Son Ye-jin's character, prompting the mother of the child actor to step forward.
On the 24th, the mother of child actor Choi Soo-yul responded to fans' questions on social media, saying, "I was also surprised. It was a funny episode that was said in a playful manner, but we also have some unfair aspects," and added, "There will be an opportunity to tell the story later. The fact is that she was kind."
It was also revealed that Son Ye-jin prepared a hard-to-find toy for Choi Soo-yul as a gift. Choi Soo-yul's mother expressed her gratitude, saying, "The Aurora doll that even Santa couldn't find. Son Ye-jin got it for us as a gift. Thank you. It's the best Christmas present." Additionally, she mentioned, "I will reveal the story of how I got Son Ye-jin's number," and has been leaving supportive comments on Son Ye-jin's Instagram, such as "I miss you" and "Fighting."
Previously, on the 19th during the production report for 'I Can't Help It', Son Ye-jin shared her feelings about returning after giving birth, saying, "Becoming a real mother helped me express my character greatly," to which Lee Byung-hun responded with a puzzled look, "That's different from what I saw on set."
Lee Byung-hun said, "The child actor playing my daughter asked a lot of questions, and I kept answering them, losing track of the shoot. But Son Ye-jin never answered once. So I said, 'Please answer,' and she replied, 'Senior, please take care of it.' Hearing this makes me think, 'So that's how she felt at that time. She was saving it up,' which made everyone laugh."
A flustered Son Ye-jin honestly explained, "I had a lot of curiosity and questions, but there were many emotional lines, and I had to focus on the director's detailed direction for my work."
However, negative comments began to appear online, such as "Don't you usually answer questions about child actors?" "That was fake," and "It's not easy to do that," leading to a controversy over her character. As malicious comments increased, the mother of the child actor ultimately stepped in to defend Son Ye-jin.
The film invited to the official competition section of this year's Venice International Film Festival tells the story of a company employee, Man-soo (Lee Byung-hun), who feels satisfied with life until he suddenly gets fired and prepares for his own war to protect his wife and two children, as well as the home he worked hard to acquire.
Set to be released domestically in September.
