Broadcaster Lee Kyung-kyu has been investigated by the police for allegedly driving under the influence of medication for panic disorder, and it seems that the police will soon conclude their investigation.
On the 30th, a police official stated at a regular press briefing regarding the investigation into Lee Kyung-kyu's drug driving allegations, "We have video footage, witness testimonies, results from the National Forensic Service, and statements from the suspect, and we plan to reach a conclusion based on these."
On the 8th of this month, Lee Kyung-kyu was reported for suspected theft of a vehicle after driving someone else's car in a parking lot in Gangnam, Seoul. The police conducted a drug test on-site, which returned a positive result. Lee Kyung-kyu was then classified as a suspect and provided the medication he has been taking for panic disorder for clarification.
On the 24th, Lee Kyung-kyu appeared at the Gangnam Police Station for questioning regarding the violation of the Road Traffic Act, stating, "I did not realize that I should not drive while under the influence of panic disorder medication when I was feeling unwell," and officially apologized, saying, "I will refrain from driving in the future if I take similar medication."
Regarding the positive result from the forensic examination, he explained, "There were no narcotic substances or marijuana, and the components of the medication I usually take were detected."
CCTV footage released by MBN shows Lee Kyung-kyu stumbling out of the car, colliding with a bus, and crashing into a car wash wall, which has sparked controversy.
Lee Kyung-kyu's legal representative, attorney Jeong Gu-seung (from Ilro Law Firm), explained in a phone call with Maeil Business Newspaper Star Today, "All the incidents were minor, and they have already been acknowledged in the police investigation," and conveyed that Lee Kyung-kyu will be more cautious about driving after taking medication in the future.
His agency, ADG Company, also stated, "Lee Kyung-kyu has been cooperating sincerely with the police investigation and has testified about his health condition and the circumstances of his driving as they are," adding, "Lee Kyung-kyu deeply reflects on this incident and will be cautious about driving after taking medication to prevent such occurrences in the future."
