Actress Jang Shin-young is making her return to her main profession after three years.
Today (9th) at 7:05 PM, MBC's daily drama 'The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun' will premiere. 'The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun' depicts a woman's desperate revenge against a conglomerate in a world where the victim has turned into the perpetrator, all in the name of her only daughter.
Director Kim Jin-hyung, known for 'Heaven's Connection' and 'The Neighbor's Villain', is at the helm, while writer Seol Kyung-eun, who has presented works like 'Hide and Seek' and 'Two Women's Room', penned the script.
In the drama, Jang Shin-young plays the charming single mother Baek Seol-hee, who captivates people's attention with her kindness and bright energy. Baek Seol-hee is a strong maternal figure who is willing to do anything for her daughter and begins her quest for revenge against the sudden misfortune that befalls her child.
One reason this work has garnered attention even before its premiere is that it marks Jang Shin-young's return after three years since the JTBC drama 'Cleaning Up' (2022). In December 2023, Jang Shin-young found herself in a hiatus after her husband Kang Kyung-jun was implicated as an affair partner in a damages lawsuit.
At the production presentation held before the premiere, when asked about her feelings on returning, Jang Shin-young said, "I was very nervous and excited. I started with the pressure to do well," and added, "As we began filming, I received even greater energy. I was quite nervous and worried about whether I could portray the role of Baek Seol-hee well."
She also expressed gratitude, saying, "I am thankful to the director for giving me the opportunity to take on the role of Baek Seol-hee. I was thirsty for acting, so when this opportunity came, I resolved to give it my all."
When questions about her husband's personal issues arose, Jang Shin-young stated, "I acted with sincerity, thinking that 'this might be my last performance' for each scene. I am fully immersed in Baek Seol-hee, and I hope viewers will focus on the character and the content of the drama, rather than on me personally."
Meanwhile, Kang Kyung-jun accepted a 50 million won damages claim filed by the plaintiff in July 2024. This led some to interpret that he had 'effectively admitted' to the affair. However, Kang Kyung-jun's side clarified, "Accepting the damages does not mean admitting to an affair. Kang Kyung-jun was very distressed and wanted to end it quickly, so he accepted it."
In August of last year, Jang Shin-young posted on social media, "We are trying to live together as a family again," indicating that she had forgiven the controversy surrounding Kang Kyung-jun's personal life.
