Netflix has confirmed the production of a new series titled 'Scandal (tentative title)' based on the film 'Scandal' and has officially announced the main casting lineup including Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, and Nana.
On the 27th, Netflix announced this news. 'Scandal (tentative title)' is a Netflix series that depicts the story of Lady Jo, a woman with exceptional talent who is trapped in the confines of the Joseon Dynasty, and Jo Won, the best womanizer of Joseon, as they engage in a daring and dangerous love bet, along with a woman named Hee-yeon entangled in that bet.
The original work 'Scandal' is the 2003 film 'Scandal - The Taming of the Shrew'. The film transposes the story of the French upper class, which was rife with conspiracy and ruin just before the French Revolution, as depicted in Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 'Dangerous Liaisons', to the Joseon Dynasty where love and temptation were forbidden. It beautifully and audaciously portrays a story stained with deadly temptation, betrayal, and revenge among the nobility, receiving acclaim from audiences. At that time, Bae Yong-joon and Jeon Do-yeon starred in the lead roles, and despite being rated for adults only, it recorded 3.52 million in box office sales.
Son Ye-jin, who has showcased her irreplaceable character portrayal through dramas like 'Crash Landing on You', 'Something in the Rain', and films like 'The Classic' and 'Be With You', will play the role of 'Lady Jo', who possesses exceptional talent and charm but faces the harsh reality of being a woman in an era where she can do nothing. 'Lady Jo' shows her strategic side by proposing a bet of seduction to 'Jo Won', who is infatuated with her.
The role of 'Jo Won', the top womanizer of Joseon who seeks pleasure and fun over social advancement, will be played by Ji Chang-wook, who has demonstrated a range of performances from intensity to softness through Netflix's 'The Sound of Magic', the film 'Revolver', and dramas like 'Welcome to Samdalri' and 'The Worst Evil'. 'Jo Won' is a charming man who does not believe in love and only enjoys dating, willing to go to any lengths to win 'Lady Jo's' heart in the bet.
Nana, who has shown a unique presence across various genres in Netflix series like 'Mask Girl', 'Glitch', and films like 'Confession' and 'The Drug King', will take on the role of 'Hee-yeon', a woman who tries to cut ties with 'Jo Won' while living a life of fidelity after losing her husband. 'Hee-yeon' struggles to maintain her composure but is shaken by her inexplicable feelings for 'Jo Won', revealing a complex inner self as she becomes increasingly drawn to him.
The direction and screenplay of 'Scandal' will be handled by director Jung Ji-woo, known for works like 'Yoo Yeol's Music Album' and 'Happy End'. Additionally, writer Lee Seung-young, known for 'Negotiation Skills', and writer Ahn Hae-song, who adapted 'Somebody', will also participate in the script.
