The 'Gayo Daejeon' scheduled to air on the 31st has also been canceled.
On the 30th, MBC decided to cancel the 'MBC Gayo Daejeon' that was set to air at 8:40 PM on the 31st and changed the programming schedule. Starting at 9 PM on the 31st, the movie 'Rebound' will be aired, followed by a rebroadcast of the Nobel Prize-winning documentary special 'The Han River Comes' at 11:15 PM.
The 'Gayo Daejeon' has many special stages and was recently undergoing pre-recording. It is reported that pre-recording took place on the 29th and 30th as well. An MBC official stated to Maeil Business Star Today on the 30th, "Pre-recording is ongoing," adding, "Details regarding the broadcast schedule will be provided later."
The decision to cancel live broadcasts of the year's biggest events, including the 'Broadcast Entertainment Awards', 'Acting Awards', and 'Gayo Daejeon', comes after a tragic incident involving a Jeju Air passenger plane at Muan International Airport, which resulted in significant loss of life. A national mourning period has been declared until January 4, 2025, and it seems inappropriate to proceed with the award ceremonies live.
Earlier, on the 29th, MBC canceled the 'MBC Broadcast Entertainment Awards' following the incident at Muan International Airport. On the 30th, they expressed their deep condolences to the victims and their families of the plane accident that occurred the previous day, stating, "In solidarity with the grieving nation, the live broadcast of the '2024 MBC Acting Awards' scheduled for December 30 at 8:40 PM has been canceled and will be replaced with a recorded broadcast." The schedule for the recorded broadcast is yet to be determined.
On the morning of the 29th, at around 9:03 AM, a Jeju Air flight C2216 from Bangkok, Thailand, crashed into the outer wall of Muan International Airport during an emergency landing, resulting in the aircraft being severely damaged and completely burned. Fire authorities reported that only 2 crew members were rescued from the aircraft, which had a total of 181 people on board, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members, and were taken to the hospital.
