German actor Thomas Kretschmann, who appeared in the film ‘Taxi Driver’, expressed his bitterness regarding the ‘December 3 Martial Law Situation’.
On the 8th, Thomas Kretschmann posted on Instagram along with a still from the movie ‘Taxi Driver’, stating, “This is a photo from the set of the film ‘Taxi Driver’, which deals with Korea’s ‘past’. ‘Taxi Driver’ is a film about Korea’s past. At least, that’s what I thought.”
The photo he posted shows the military controlling the highway leading into Gwangju with tanks and trucks.
In response, Korean netizens expressed their gratitude, saying things like “Thank you for mentioning this” and “I sincerely appreciate your continued interest in Korea’s situation even after so much time has passed.”
Released in 2017, ‘Taxi Driver’ tells the story of a taxi driver who, while taking a foreign guest to Gwangju, witnesses the realities of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. The film was a commercial success, attracting 12 million viewers.
Thomas Kretschmann played the role of German journalist Jürgen Hinzpeter, who informed the world about the realities of the democratic movement. He has also appeared in films such as ‘The Pianist’, ‘Resident Evil’, ‘King Kong’, ‘Wanted’, ‘Indiana Jones’, and ‘Gran Turismo’.
