Former baseball player Lee Dae-ho reminisced about his late grandmother.
In the episode aired on the 25th, SBS ‘Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 - You Are My Destiny’ depicted the daily life of Lee Dae-ho and his wife Shin Hye-jung.
On this day, Lee Dae-ho's wife Shin Hye-jung said, “When my husband retired, I thought, ‘I guess my role as a sportsman's wife is over,’ but suddenly our son started playing baseball.” Lee Dae-ho added, “It’s been about 7 months since our son started playing baseball.”
Shin Hye-jung mentioned, “Even before we got married, my husband said he would never let our son play sports. He especially said he would never let him play baseball, and I heard that so many times it felt like I had earwax.”
Lee Dae-ho explained the reason for opposing his son's baseball, saying, “When you go to the baseball field, you have to stand there all the time. You have to run around, pick up the ball, bend down, and get up. If one person makes a mistake, the whole team has to do punishment.”
He continued, “I practiced like that when I was young. We couldn’t even rest in the scorching sun. Thinking that my son has to spend that time makes my heart ache. It’s really a tough time.”
Lee Dae-ho recalled, “My father passed away when I was 3 years old. My mother remarried before I became an elementary school student. After that, I mostly lived with my grandmother. My grandmother raised me and my brother.”
He added, “However, since we were a bit poor, it wasn’t easy to pay the baseball club fees. If you play baseball, you have to get a uniform and pay for snacks every month. It cost a lot of money in various ways, so I thought a lot before starting baseball.”
He continued, “I was able to play baseball because my grandmother was there. She gave me pocket money every day. In middle school, I needed 2000 won for transportation every day, and she took care of that for me. When I needed to buy equipment but didn’t have money right away, she pawned her jewelry to get a few tens of thousands of won to buy me equipment and then paid it back after selling something to get it back. I think she went to the pawn shop about 20 to 30 times.”
Lee Dae-ho shared that his grandmother passed away when he was selected for the youth national team and was on the rise. He said, “My grandmother suffered a lot and passed away. I started playing baseball because of her, and since I started to make her live well, all my dreams disappeared. I didn’t want to play baseball, and I didn’t want to go to school either.”
He added, “At that time, the coach said, ‘Your grandmother, who has taken care of you until now, will be watching over you from heaven, what will you do?’ At that moment, I thought, ‘Let’s not go off track and give it a try.’ I came this far by doing my best.”
