'Brave Detectives 4' revealed the truth behind a brutal crime.
In the 37th episode of T-Cast E Channel's 'Brave Detectives 4' (directed by Lee Ji-sun), former head of the Seoul Songpa Police Station's violent crimes unit Lee Kwang-seob, former police commissioner Yoon Wae-chul from the scientific investigation team (KCSI), and Inspector Kim Jin-soo appeared to share their investigative diary.
The first case began with a report from a wife who could not contact her husband, who had left home claiming he was going to collect money he had lent. The missing person was a man in his late 40s, and the last signal from his mobile phone was detected about 200 km away from his residence. This area was where the debtor, to whom the missing person had lent about 1.6 billion won, lived, but the debtor claimed he was overseas.
It was confirmed that the missing person had taken out a loan of 200 million won against his land at a bank the day before he went missing and had obtained nine copies of a seal certificate from the local government office. The last person he called was the debtor's brother, and the two had met through an acquaintance. This connection also linked him to the debtor, who was looking for investors. The brother, claiming to be an agricultural management expert and auction specialist, suggested an investment and partnership to the missing person, mentioning local development opportunities. However, the brother had a criminal record of nine fraud and gambling offenses, while the debtor had four fraud offenses. Up until just before his disappearance, the brother had only repaid 50 million won of the 1.6 billion won principal.
On the presumed day of disappearance, a thorough investigation of vehicles passing through the tollgate revealed that the missing person was seen in a vehicle owned by the brother. Additionally, it was confirmed that three mobile phones, including the brother's, were turned off at the same location. The arrested brother claimed he did not know the missing person, but evidence such as CCTV footage ultimately led him to confess to the crime. It was revealed that the missing person's body had been buried next to his parents' grave, and the excavator driver was shocked to learn that he had been asked to bury a white deer.
The arrested brother continued to exercise his right to remain silent. However, it was confirmed that he had temporarily changed the ownership of his land to the missing person's name by deceiving both the missing person and a real estate agent, and the brother claimed that all the murder and body disposal was carried out by the younger brother. They had never developed a business with the borrowed money, and there was only a tip suggesting that the brothers frequented casinos. The younger brother was sentenced to life imprisonment, while the elder brother received a 20-year prison sentence.
The second case introduced by KCSI was a shocking incident that turned South Korea upside down when a dismembered body of an unidentified woman was found at a subway station. The case began with a report from a station employee who discovered a body inside a travel bag found in the subway station restroom. The employee noted that about an hour before the report, a man had passed through the turnstile dragging a travel bag, and there was a suspicious red liquid on the floor. A fellow employee asked the man about the bag, and he only gave a vague answer that it contained 40 kg of pork. The bag was filled with a garbage bag, blankets, and clothes, and inside, a dismembered body of a woman estimated to be in her 20s or 30s was found, adding to the shock.
The station employee suspected that the perpetrator was a foreigner due to his poor Korean. In fact, there was an industrial complex nearby where foreign workers lived. The perpetrator was suspected to be a Chinese national living in the area, and through a description of his appearance, investigators were able to track him down, capturing footage of him purchasing a garbage bag and travel bag about five hours before the body was discovered.
The investigation team placed advertisements in the area and created wanted posters using captured CCTV images of the suspect, but it was not easy to gather tips. While directly interviewing nearby residents, they received a report from a resident that a Korean woman living alone next door had not been seen. Upon checking the house, a hammer and bone fragments were found in the bathroom, and blood-stained men's clothing and the victim's broken mobile phone were discovered in the balcony trash can. Additionally, a human leg was found in a garbage bag on the roof, which matched the DNA of the victim.
Checking the victim's immigration records revealed that she had left for China three months prior and had returned the day before the body was found. Her Chinese boyfriend had been in China for about seven months. The boyfriend immediately recognized the man in the CCTV footage as his friend. After being arrested, the perpetrator claimed that he had been in a two-year extramarital relationship with the victim and became angry when he could not contact her, and after seeing her with another man upon her return, he committed the crime in a drunken rage. However, there was no evidence of another relationship from the victim, and it was revealed that the perpetrator had withdrawn 9.8 million won from four of the victim's bank accounts. The perpetrator also made false statements about the unhandled body, which incited anger. Ultimately, the perpetrator was sentenced to life imprisonment.
