How Did the Master of Dongmyo, Guan Yu, Become a God?
In the 201st episode of tvN's 'Naked World History' (directed by Kim Hyung-oh, Lee Yoon-ho, Seo Yong-seok) airing on the 29th, the process of how the general Guan Yu, who was merely one of many heroes, became a god will be revealed.
To this end, Professor Lee Seong-won from the Department of History at Chonnam National University will serve as a lecturer. This professor, who explains the complex history and culture of China in an easy and entertaining way, will thoroughly unveil how Guan Yu came to be revered as a god during the lecture.
Professor Lee introduces, "Dongmyo is a shrine dedicated to Guan Yu. Guan Yu is revered as a god not only in our country but also around the world, transcending the status of a hero." He particularly notes, "Among the many characters in the 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms', Guan Yu is the only one depicted as a divine being," and shares the astonishing fact that Guan Yu has been worshipped for over 2,000 years as the embodiment of righteousness and loyalty, as well as a legendary general.
He continues, "The historical novel 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' elevated Guan Yu to the status of a hero," adding to the intrigue. While the historical text 'Records of the Three Kingdoms' does not give Guan Yu much prominence, in 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms', he is portrayed as a divine figure beyond a mere hero. The broadcast will reveal what decisive events in 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' made Guan Yu a hero and the background that allowed him to ascend to the ranks of the divine.
On this day, the travel mates will include Park Geon-wook from Zero Base One and the shaman Guan Yu Do-ryeong, who worships Guan Yu as a deity. Park Geon-wook, a true fan of the 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms', will share interesting stories surrounding Guan Yu, while Guan Yu Do-ryeong will provide detailed insights into Guan Yu's appearance and personality, adding to the program's value.
