Director Kim Tae-jun described the protagonist, Woosung, played by Kang Ha-neul, as “a portrait of today’s youth.”
At the production presentation of the Netflix film ‘84 Square Meters’ held at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel on the morning of the 14th, Director Kim explained, “I hoped Woosung would be a reflection of today’s youth. I wanted to project the realistic aspects and desires that young people have today.”
He continued, “Given the harsh circumstances Woosung faces, I was worried that he might become too dark of a character. That’s why it was essential for this character to be played by Kang Ha-neul. I thought that if his unique positive image was applied, he could transform from a simply dark character into a more poignant one.”
‘84 Square Meters’ is an unpredictable thriller about Woosung (Kang Ha-neul), a member of the “young-people-trying-to-buy-a-home” group, who successfully purchases an 84 square meter apartment but suffers from mysterious noise disturbances from above. The film captures the suspense between characters surrounding the issue of inter-floor noise in a typical 84 square meter apartment.
Kang Ha-neul shared, “It’s really poignant. He’s a young man who has worked very hard, using everything from housing loans, severance pay, a one-room deposit, his mother’s land, to even his soul to buy an apartment. But after moving in, he becomes increasingly stressed and weakened due to unexplained noise from above.”
He added, “Usually, scripts are written to help readers understand the characters. However, the script written by the director felt like a storyboard meant for directing. As soon as I saw the script, I could envision the director’s style. I read it all in one sitting.”
In addition to Kang Ha-neul, the film also stars Yeom Hye-ran and Seo Hyun-woo. It will be released worldwide on the 18th.
