Director Tarsem Singh revealed the reasons why ‘The Fall’ is being loved again after 18 years since its release.
On the morning of the 6th, a press conference for the film ‘The Fall: Director’s Cut’ (hereafter referred to as The Fall) was held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul.
Director Tarsem Singh stated, “I don’t know why it wasn’t well-received when it was first released. There are advantages to breaking away from certain patterns. When films like ‘Parasite’ or ‘Oldboy’ show something different from the norm, people get excited. I think this film was different from people’s expectations. Fashion also becomes retro again after 20 years. I think my film is similar.”
He continued, “If critics had fully supported the film when it was first released, the outcome would have been different. However, a completely different result came out. This film is not one that can satisfy everyone. It doesn’t have a conspiracy, and people can say it’s fantastic or terrible after watching it. But if someone says it’s okay, I get more worried.”
Director Tarsem Singh also expressed, “I am grateful that this film has been rediscovered thanks to the internet. When the film was first released, no one wanted it, and I had to release it on my own two years later. I don’t use Facebook or Instagram, so I didn’t know there were people who were excited about ‘The Fall.’ When I went to the Toronto Film Festival last year, people asked why they couldn’t see ‘The Fall.’ I wanted to tell them about it 20 years ago, but when I asked why they weren’t there then, they said they were 10 years old at that time. So I realized that a completely different generation wants to see this film.”
He added, “Just like it was released in Korea, it was shown in a few theaters in the U.S. for one day and sold out in just a few minutes. And because the film was so popular, it was expanded to more theaters. This happened in Korea as well, and I hope it happens in more countries.”
Director Tarsem Singh remarked, “Korean cinemas are so great, and I’m happy to be loved in Korea. My film needs to be seen in good theaters because of its style and visuals.” He then humorously added, “I found out how many Korean female audiences have watched it, and I want to infinitely love Korean cinema and Korean women because so many female audiences liked it. It has allowed my baby to keep running.”
Finally, he drew attention by saying, “Thank you” in Korean once again.
‘The Fall,’ re-released with a 4K remaster after 18 years, tells the story of a stuntman named Roy who shares a fantastic adventure of five outlaws with a curious young girl named Alexandria, set against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes from 24 countries around the world.
