SummerSummer (real name Lee Da-som, 37), a YouTuber with 1 million subscribers sharing local news from the United States, made a bold statement.
On the 12th, SummerSummer conducted a live broadcast titled ‘Update on the court battle between Blake Lively and director Justin Baldoni’ on her YouTube channel.
During the broadcast, SummerSummer mentioned the case where Hollywood actress Blake Lively filed a lawsuit against director and co-star Justin Baldoni for sexual harassment and defamation.
She summarized the case by saying, “This is the hottest courtroom drama happening in Hollywood. An endless lawsuit war,” and added, “Both sides have filed a lawsuit worth a total of 897 billion won.”
Amid this, a subscriber left a comment saying, “In our country, if you say you support feminism, there’s a disadvantageous atmosphere, but (it’s not like that in Hollywood) it’s fascinating.”
In response, SummerSummer asked, “Why is it that in our country, if you say you support feminism, it becomes disadvantageous? Why is it disadvantageous to raise your voice for women’s rights?” She continued, “Is there a woman who is not a feminist? Am I just not aware or haven’t studied enough?” and expressed her confusion by asking, “Don’t all women support their own rights?”
As SummerSummer's comments became public, netizens reacted with comments like “A bold statement,” “That’s true,” and “It’s right for women to assert their rights.” However, some criticized her, saying, “If you say you’re a feminist, you’re not normal,” “It’s a frame created by women with inferiority complexes,” and “It has destroyed fairness and common sense.”
As the controversy spread, SummerSummer posted on social media, “The comment section was in chaos, and I was shocked and quickly closed it. I’m still bewildered that something so obvious I said has caused this much controversy.” She explained, “I closed the comment section because I didn’t want you (subscribers) to fight among yourselves. There were also malicious comments directed at me, but I don’t want you to be divided and heated over my video.”
Meanwhile, SummerSummer currently has 1.02 million subscribers and creates content that delivers information about incidents and issues in the United States.
