Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and chairman of the Gates Foundation, revealed the reason for his declaration to donate 99% of his wealth.
In an episode of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' aired on the 27th, Bill Gates opened up by saying, "Isn't it true that everyone forms their values from their parents? My parents weren't very wealthy, but they donated and volunteered a lot."
He continued, "When I started to succeed, my mother shared a saying from various religious texts: 'With great gifts come great responsibilities and obligations.' So, just as I poured all my energy and talent into creating Microsoft, I thought that in my second career, I would focus on giving back wealth to society and innovating for the poor."
Bill Gates also stated, "I was really lucky. The shares of the company became very valuable. I have no intention of using that money for myself. I don't believe in my children inheriting the family business. I think they should earn money on their own and find their own path. So, I decided that what remains for me should be returned to society."
He added, "I spent a long time thinking about what meaningful impact this money could have. I pondered questions like, 'Why do children die?' and 'Are we coping well?' But it turned out we weren't. That became my focus," explaining his reasons for donating to healthcare.
Bill Gates was also asked, "How much do you spend in a day?"
He replied, "To be honest, I live in a pretty nice house. It has a very large garden, and there are people who cook delicious food for me. When I travel, I actually take a private jet. Thanks to that, I can travel around the world, including Africa. In fact, I spend quite a bit of money."
He continued, "I use a Samsung foldable phone, which is a very good model. However, I didn't pay for this because it was a gift from Chairman Lee Jae-yong," jokingly eliciting laughter.
On that day, Bill Gates, who answered the quiz about "the oldest Windows boot sound," donated the prize of 1 million won, adding warmth to the event.
