According to the legal community on the 7th, the Busan Eastern District Court issued a summary order imposing a fine of 7 million won on Jang Won-sam, who was indicted on March 6 for violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling (injury).
Jang Won-sam is accused of reversing his BMW vehicle while intoxicated and colliding with the bumper of a parked Benz vehicle in front of an apartment in Suyeong-gu, Busan, around 1:20 PM on August 17 last year. At that time, Jang's blood alcohol concentration was confirmed to be 0.09%, which is above the level for license cancellation (0.08% or higher).
He is also accused of driving under the influence over a distance of 40 km from Changwon, Gyeongnam to Suyeong-gu, Busan before the accident.
At that time, Jang admitted on social media, “It is true that I caused a drunk driving accident. There is no excuse. I sincerely apologize for disappointing you,” bowing his head. He continued, “I did not drink on the day of the accident, but if I had any residual hangover, I should have called a taxi or not driven with companions or used public transportation. I thought I would be fine since I drank the day before and had enough sleep, and I took the wheel with a careless mindset, which led to the accident.”
He added, “It is right for me to take responsibility by voluntarily stepping down from ‘The Strongest Baseball,’ and I will meet with the PD and director to explain the situation and fulfill my responsibilities accordingly,” and he voluntarily stepped down.
Jang Won-sam began his professional career by joining the Hyundai Unicorns in 2006 and played as a starting pitcher. He has many achievements, including winning his first Korean Series in 2011, becoming the first wins leader and winning the Golden Glove in 2012. He retired after the 2020 season.
