Former National Assembly member Cho Chang-won has expressed his stance on the state of emergency.
On the 3rd, after President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency, Cho posted on social media, "The spirit of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law triumphs over guns, force, and violence," adding, "History of South Korea and humanity proves this. Although power and force may temporarily prevail, we know that they can never be eternal or last long."
He further stated, "I hope the military and police do not commit unnecessary mistakes that will ultimately lead to accountability. Let us restore the normal function of the National Assembly and quickly begin to recover from the enormous national, civic, and economic damage already caused by this turmoil. I sincerely hope so."
He also shared an article reporting that a resolution demanding the lifting of the state of emergency was passed in the National Assembly with 190 members present and 190 votes in favor around 1 AM on the 4th.
After the state of emergency was lifted, Cho posted again, saying, "Although the ruling and opposition parties, progressives and conservatives have tangled and fought with each other, we share the same desire to protect South Korea, its people, democracy, and the Constitution. I believe we will unite our strength and resolve to overcome the crisis and work towards normalization in the face of the unjust and dangerous attempts of some extremists that shake and endanger South Korea."
He added, "After normalization, please compete again. We know how difficult it is to heal the pain and suffering of victims of war, crime, and accidents, and how challenging it is to restore normalcy and peace in daily life. We will never tolerate attempts and actions by those in power or forces that disrupt the normal state of the nation and disturb the peace of the entire populace. I trust that you will thoroughly investigate the truth behind the state of emergency and take strict legal action against all involved, excluding political or personal interests."
