Actor Ryu Soo-young reminisced about his debut process.
On the 14th, Ryu Soo-young appeared as a guest on KBS2’s ‘Problematic Kids in the Rooftop Room’.
On this day, Ryu Soo-young shared that he performed magic tricks during his university days, saying, “I breathed fire and broke stones placed on my stomach. I was in charge of the nunchaku.”
Ryu Soo-young said, “At first, I joined the theater club without my will, not knowing my future. When I opened the door to the theater club, there were senior female students sitting at a long table. They all looked at me, and I thought, ‘I shouldn’t be here.’”
He continued, “The next place I entered was the traditional martial arts club. When I opened the door, Lee Seung-yoon asked, ‘Did you join the martial arts?’ I looked back as I entered and saw a three-section staff hanging on the door. I thought it would be fun. But that day, we practiced breathing fire with kerosene right away,” which drew laughter.
Ryu Soo-young won a competition on ‘Campus Video Song’ with his magic show, but that was not the reason for his debut. He later appeared as a false dieter on ‘Truth Game’ and said, “I had to act. But if I just followed the script, it wouldn’t be fun, right? I knew the flow of the script and acted spontaneously. It turned out to be fun. I deceived everyone,” he laughed.
Ryu Soo-young added, “While I was in school, the place that produced ‘Three Friends’ was casting newcomers for a pilot sitcom. They contacted me too. I went to a camera test after stopping my part-time job, and I got selected. They said they contacted me after watching the broadcast.”
He continued, “When I actually tried it, there was a lot of script, and it wasn’t easy. From that time, I started researching like I was studying, and when I didn’t know something, I got scolded. I shot two episodes like that, but I was left with a sense of regret, thinking, ‘What is this?’”
He then said, “So I thought I should start over from the beginning with minor roles. I entered as a minor role and waited for 6 hours, and only my arm came out. I spent a year like that. Afterward, I got a call from a daily drama, and I started getting proper roles.”
