The Tving original series 'Study Group' has perfectly captivated Asian viewers.
According to the weekly chart for the first week of February (February 3rd to February 9th) released by Viu, Asia's largest regional OTT platform, 'Study Group' (English title: Study Group) ranked first in Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Additionally, it showed a strong upward trend in major Asian countries, ranking 3rd in Hong Kong, 5th in Singapore, and 8th in the Philippines, proving the power of K-school dramas.
'Study Group' is a comedic high school action series about Yoon Ga-min (played by Hwang Min-hyun), who wants to study well but is naturally gifted only in fighting, forming a 'study group' to survive in the worst school. By twisting the existing tropes of school dramas, it offers fresh and comedic settings that provide both laughter and tension, capturing the audience's interest.
In particular, Hwang Min-hyun has confirmed his global popularity by achieving consecutive hits, following the drama 'No More Lies', which ranked first in three countries on Viu in 2023, and now with this work. Moreover, it is interesting to note that 'No More Lies' is also gaining renewed attention alongside the success of 'Study Group'.
Furthermore, the achievements of 'Study Group' on Viu are significant as it continues the success lineage of K-school dramas, following last year's hits 'Pyramid Game' and 'I Became a High School Student as a Gangster'. This once again proves that the variations of the high teen genre, which expand the boundaries of school dramas, have competitiveness in the global market.
Viu is a Hong Kong-based PCCW regional OTT platform that presents popular Korean content to 16 countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. In addition to the currently airing dramas 'Study Group', 'Eagle Five', and the variety show 'Living in Finland', various K-content launches such as 'Witch' and 'Undercover High School' are also planned.
