Detective Kang Yoon-seok revealed the behind-the-scenes story of capturing the notorious escapee Shin Chang-won.
On the 29th, the tvN show ‘You Quiz on the Block’ featured Detective Kang Yoon-seok, a living legend of the South Korean violent crimes unit, as a guest.
On that day, Yoo Jae-suk opened the conversation by saying, “Shin Chang-won was on the run for 907 days, and I heard that you were the head of the special investigation team at the Seoul Police at that time.” Detective Kang Yoon-seok replied, “It was really tough back then. I felt a sense of despair that we couldn’t catch a suspect who was making things difficult for the police. There were articles criticizing the police's incompetence, so I thought, ‘I must catch Shin Chang-won no matter what.’”
Detective Kang Yoon-seok continued, “During the time when Shin Chang-won had set up a hideout in Suncheon, an appliance repairman discovered him and reported it to Seoul 112. At that time, there were hundreds of reports related to Shin Chang-won every day, but this particular report felt different.”
He added, “I had a strong feeling that it was indeed Shin Chang-won, so I immediately notified the relevant police department. Fortunately, I heard that he was captured just 30 minutes after the notification, and it felt like a decade-long burden was lifted off my chest.”
He further stated, “From my experience, Shin Chang-won was just a petty criminal. He was simply lucky to be on the run and not get caught.”
