Actor Han Seok-kyu, who returned to MBC after 30 years, won the Grand Prize.
On the 5th, the ‘2024 MBC Acting Awards’ was recorded and broadcast instead of live due to the Jeju Air passenger plane tragedy.
The ‘2024 MBC Acting Awards’ is a ceremony that summarizes dramas aired on MBC, including ‘Flowers Bloom at Night’, ‘Wonderful World’, ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’, ‘Our Home’, ‘Death to Snow White - Black Out’ (hereafter referred to as ‘Snow White’), ‘Such an Intimate Betrayer’ (hereafter referred to as ‘Intimate Betrayer’), ‘The Call You Just Made’, ‘I Don’t Like Pork Cutlet’, ‘The Third Marriage’, ‘Brave and Fearless Yong Soo-jung’, and ‘Kind-hearted Captain’.
The Grand Prize nominees were Lee Ha-nee from ‘Flowers Bloom at Night’, Kim Nam-joo from ‘Wonderful World’, Lee Je-hoon from ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’, Kim Hee-sun from ‘Our Home’, Byun Yo-han from ‘Snow White’, Han Seok-kyu from ‘Intimate Betrayer’, and Yoo Yeon-seok from ‘The Call You Just Made’. The Grand Prize went to Han Seok-kyu.
Wearing a black suit, Han Seok-kyu said, “I feel sorry, not just for myself but for the audience and my colleagues as well. I want to apologize for having this kind of event and I feel sorry,” referring to the Jeju Air passenger plane tragedy.
He continued, “Everything actors do is a gesture for the viewers, but such a tragic event has occurred, and it breaks my heart. I am only thinking about how to convey the truth and sincerity of being an actor to the viewers. I sincerely want to express my condolences to the families and bereaved of those who have experienced such a great tragedy,” he reiterated his condolences.
Han Seok-kyu stated, “The reason I chose ‘Such an Intimate Betrayer’ is that I wanted to talk about the importance of family. I have been reflecting on the fact that family has been a major theme in my life. I wanted to convey and talk about the importance of family through this work. However, I wanted to talk about such themes, but families have lost...” He paused for a moment and said, “I offer my deep condolences. I feel a sense of regret and want to apologize for some reason. I hope you overcome this great sorrow,” and he choked up several times, unable to finish his remarks. He concluded by saying, “I’m sorry,” and left the stage without finishing his speech.
All attendees at the awards ceremony wore black suits or dresses to mourn the Jeju Air passenger plane tragedy that occurred on the 29th of last month at Jeonnam Muan International Airport.
The Best Acting Award in the mini-series category went to Yoo Yeon-seok from ‘The Call You Just Made’, Lee Je-hoon from ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’, and Lee Ha-nee from ‘Flowers Bloom at Night’. The daily and short drama category went to Seo Jun-young and Um Hyun-kyung from ‘Brave and Fearless Yong Soo-jung’, and Oh Seung-ah from ‘The Third Marriage’. All of them sent their condolences and sympathies to the victims and bereaved families of the tragedy.
A moment of remembrance was also held for the late Kim Soo-mi, who passed away on October 25 of last year. Kim Soo-mi debuted as a talent in MBC's 3rd public recruitment in 1970 and gained great love for her role as a daily mother in ‘Jeonwon Ilgi’, which aired from 1980. Thanks to the love of the viewers, she became the first supporting actress to win the Grand Prize at the Acting Awards in 1985.
MBC presented a memorial video along with a special gratitude plaque. Kim Soo-mi's daughter-in-law, Seo Hyo-rim, accepted the award on her behalf, saying, “Unexpectedly, our beloved country, South Korea, is suffering too much from various issues. I thought that if I could lessen my pain, things would brighten up, but as sad news comes in at the end of the year, I wonder how to cope with it. I want to live for tomorrow,” and added, “My mother used to say, ‘Yesterday is the past, today is a gift, and tomorrow is a mystery.’ I want to live today, which is a gift, and tomorrow, which is a mystery,” and expressed her hope that “the citizens of South Korea, who are all suffering together, can quickly rise again in the new year.”
