JIBS Jeju Broadcasting, which faced controversy over an anchor's 'daytime drinking during a live broadcast', has ultimately received severe disciplinary action.
On the 4th, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (Chairperson Ryu Hee-rim) held a full meeting at the Seoul Mokdong Broadcasting Center and unanimously decided to impose a legal sanction of 'warning' on the 'JIBS 8 News' dated March 30, 2024. Regulations 'Article 27 (Maintaining Dignity) No. 1' and 'Article 55-2 (Broadcasting Accidents)' were applied.
In a written statement on the same day, JIBS explained, "The anchor forgot that they were substituting for the evening news and attended the festival opening ceremony held that day, where they had a drink. They later realized they were the substitute anchor while feeling unwell and taking cold medicine."
They continued, "The news staff recognized something was wrong after the broadcast started and immediately halted the news. An apology broadcast was conducted through the same program on April 1, and on April 2, a disciplinary committee was held, resulting in a three-month suspension for the anchor and exclusion from news production for one year, while a warning was issued to the news manager."
However, the Commission stated, "There was no timeliness in the follow-up measures," and added, "This is a broadcasting accident that happens once in several decades, and broadcasting under the influence of alcohol is absolutely unacceptable. Legal sanctions are unavoidable."
