The drama ‘Our Movie’, starring actors Namgoong-min and Jeon Yeo-bin, has reached its halfway point. As Namgoong-min requested viewers to “please watch until episode 5” amid low ratings, will it be able to succeed in rebounding?
‘Our Movie’ (written by Han Ga-eun and Kang Kyung-min, directed by Lee Jeong-heum), which premiered on June 13 on SBS, depicts the love story of a film director, Lee Je-ha (played by Namgoong-min), who has no tomorrow, and an actress, Lee Da-eum (played by Jeon Yeo-bin), for whom today is the last.
The previous work of ‘Our Movie’, ‘Gwigung’, started with a rating of 9.2% (according to Nielsen Korea, nationwide) and ended with a final episode rating of 11%, concluding its run with popularity. Additionally, due to the ‘unbeatable myth’ of SBS Friday-Saturday dramas, which includes ‘My Perfect Secretary’, ‘Treasure Island’, and ‘Gwigung’, there was significant interest in the ratings of ‘Our Movie’.
However, ‘Our Movie’ recorded a disappointing rating of 4.2% for its first episode, failing to meet expectations. There has been no upward trend since then. This 12-episode series has aired up to episode 6, but has never surpassed the rating of its first episode.
Several factors have been mentioned as reasons for the low ratings of ‘Our Movie’.
One of them is the scheduling of a calm melodrama centered on a terminal illness during the hot summer. Given the nature of the traditional melodrama genre, there is a sense of regret that it might have received a better response if it had been scheduled in the fall or winter.
Reactions to the performance of the female lead, Jeon Yeo-bin, have also been mixed. While some netizens defended her by saying, “Jeon Yeo-bin has found her life character,” others expressed negative opinions, stating, “Jeon Yeo-bin’s tone disrupts immersion in the drama,” “It’s miscasting,” and “Jeon Yeo-bin seems to have a fixed type of role that suits her.”
As the low ratings of ‘Our Movie’ continued, Namgoong-min expressed his thoughts through his SNS account on the 15th of last month.
He stated, “Despite the current low ratings, I am very confident. So please keep your interest until exactly episode 5,” adding, “If there is still no remarkable rebound by then, please hold me accountable for the humiliation of being last and scold me with harsher words. It will be my responsibility.”
The fifth episode that Namgoong-min mentioned has just passed. In the 7th episode airing on the 4th, it is expected to depict the changes between Namgoong-min and Jeon Yeo-bin, who begin to feel a subtle shift after a secret confession. Attention is focused on whether their romance will be the key to a ratings rebound.
