Former announcer and broadcaster Wang Jong-geun revealed that he lost 1 billion won due to investment failures.
On the 20th, in the KBS2 entertainment show ‘The Boss's Ears Are Donkey Ears’ (directed by Ahn Sang-eun, hereafter ‘Sadangui’), a scene was depicted where Um Ji-in met announcer Wang Jong-geun for her junior Hong Joo-yeon, who became a genuine celebrity.
Um Ji-in invited Wang Jong-geun, the longest-serving MC and a living legend in the announcer world, as a special mentor for Hong Joo-yeon, who became the MC of the TV show ‘Genuine Goods’.
Wang Jong-geun mentioned about Hong Joo-yeon, “I already knew Joo-yeon. My son is from Sungkyunkwan University, and Joo-yeon was famous for being pretty,” and praised her by saying, “She would make a great daughter-in-law.” Park Myung-soo, who was watching, protested to Um Ji-in, saying, “Hyun-moo is watching right now,” and Um Ji-in jokingly replied, “I just wanted to make senior Jeon Hyun-moo nervous.” In response, Jeon Hyun-moo quipped, “I’m really anxious now,” which made everyone laugh.
When asked why he declared himself a freelancer in 1999, Wang Jong-geun said, “I received too many advertising offers. I thought I would be sitting on a pile of money. When I told my wife, she readily agreed,” and revealed, “I applied for voluntary retirement and received 200 million won, but I lost it all.”
He continued, “At first, I invested 200 million won in a waste processing oil extraction company, but they didn’t give me shares. It was a friend, and he was a good person. That person ended up in prison. It wasn’t a scam,” and added, “It seems I have a connection with waste. The next was a mushroom business using waste, but that was a scam.”
He then said, “After that, I invested in a golf overseas tour business, but that company went bankrupt in a year,” and mentioned, “There’s also a fermented bean product business. Altogether, I lost 1 billion won. If you just look at the headlines of internet articles, it says ‘Wang Jong-geun 1 billion scam,’ so it looks like I committed a fraud,” expressing his bitterness.
