Singer Choi Soo-ho made a stunning debut on the first stage of ‘Current King of Singers 2’.
On the first broadcast of MBN’s ‘Current King of Singers 2’ on the afternoon of the 26th, Choi Soo-ho showcased his unique presence as a ‘Trot sensation’.
‘Current King of Singers 2’ is a large-scale project commemorating the 60th anniversary of Korea-Japan diplomatic relations, and it is a national representative selection survival program to select the top 7 ‘top male active singers’ who will participate in the ‘Korea-Japan King of Singers Competition’ in 2025.
During the broadcast, MC Shin Dong-yeop asked, “Is there anyone who wants to be the first to take the stage?” while looking for the first participant for the self-evaluation round. Amidst the participants glancing at each other, Choi Soo-ho raised his hand high and confidently stated, “I want to go first because I entered the competition venue first,” showing a relaxed demeanor.
On stage, Choi Soo-ho raised the atmosphere with a witty greeting, saying, “If there is Suho from EXO in the idol world, then there is me, Choi Soo-ho, in the Trot world.” He added, “I came out because I wanted to compete with my esteemed seniors,” which made everyone cheer.
Choi Soo-ho introduced himself, saying, “I was born in Tokyo, Japan, attended elementary school there, and started learning pansori in earnest from middle school. I am currently studying at the Korea National University of Arts under my parents' teaching to not lose the essence of Korea.” Hearing this, Noh Ji-hoon pressed the button to give him a score even before he performed, saying, “I want to give you courage.”
For the self-evaluation round, Choi Soo-ho chose Kim Soo-hee’s ‘It’s Too Much’ as his performance song. As the song began, he wiped the smile off his face and quickly immersed himself in the emotion. He showcased a mature singing style and vocal ability that belied his age, overwhelming the stage with a deep resonance that contrasted with his youthful appearance.
Choi Soo-ho’s unique emotional appeal perfectly blended with the poignant lyrics of the song, delivering a profound impact to everyone’s hearts. Scoring 32 out of 33 points, just shy of a perfect score, Choi Soo-ho expressed, “I am very, very satisfied,” and once again thanked the other contestants.
Fellow contestant Hwanhee praised him, saying, “It was really burdensome, and you courageously took a position that any singer would want to avoid, but I almost forgot to press the button because I was so engrossed in watching.” Kim Soo-chan also commented, “I think you have an excellent ability to immerse yourself when singing emotional songs,” showering Choi Soo-ho with compliments for his skills and passionate performance.
Choi Soo-ho, who left a remarkable impression on viewers from the very first broadcast, appears on ‘Current King of Singers 2’, which airs every Tuesday at 9:50 PM on MBN.
